cemetery at Dawkins SA – life was short I’m 57 years old and this year an undergraduate University Student. A Generation of Opportunity I have had many opportunities that others have not. Earning a university education in my early 20s. I used that privilege to work in remote NT communities. I put my degree to use, having adventures, and exploring cultures and places. Gaining a small understanding of what it means not to have the opportunities I was given. Fertility and Safe Childbearing In my 30s and early 40s I discovered I had the privilege of fertility. Birthing seven amazing human beings ..read more

I went to the doctors to get a health clearance, to work as a lifeguard at the local pool. Dr Hayley had me read the eye chart across the room. The letters were blurry and I was guessing more than reading. Hayley suggested I go see my optometrist and get my glasses adjusted. With a grin, she told me to wear my glasses at the pool, especially when her children were there! The optometrist did all the tests and looked at me quizzically. Can you give me your glasses? he asked. I handed them over and he proceeded to clean them. Handing them back, he asked me to put them on. And just like that, I c ..read more

Who do you want to be? How do you want to show up in the world?

I have spent my first 57 years reacting to life events and those around me. Rather than finding out who I am and being who I want to be. Our past may shape us, but it doesn’t define who we are. As a child growing up in a family under stress, I learned to react to that stress to make myself small, trying to avoid or appease. These days I recognise that as, fight or flight and hyper vigilance. If you grow up in fear of the next ‘smack’, argument and waiting for your dad to return, knowing you were going to cop it, it changes who you are and who you become. When children grow up in fear it change ..read more

Making Paper On A Sunny Day

There’s nothing like being creative in the sunshine, while spending time with those you love. Creativity is about filling my cup. Putting the things I enjoy into my life, to help balance out those things that challenge me. You’re invited to my home to play in the sun. Life can be sad if I let it be. I have the choice to focus on the crap parts or the fun happy moments. The choice is mine, it may not be the easy choice to make at times, but it still is my choice. It’s too easy for me to focus on my challenges, way to easy. I live with BPD and three of my seven children live with an ASD diagno ..read more

Peter and I celebrated 25 years of marriage last week. We celebrated by a luxurious night away at Tanunda, in the Barossa Valley. Staying at a hotel which had a bath I could almost swim in and a king size bed we didn’t need to share with Tazz, Kouta, Ace or Ollie. We had dinner at 1918, a beautifully relaxed restaurant with impeccable service and food. The staff had made a heart out of dried rose petals on our table for the celebration. I have, in a previous life prior to children, been to some very posh silver service restaurants. Thanks to a friend with an expenses account, back in the 90s ..read more

Photo by Polina Kovaleva on Pexels.com The last couple of years have been painful and wonderful. Growth, in my experience, comes with pain. The pain and sadness in closing the shop and the excitement for new adventures, learning and growth. If you missed the last blog post, I was offered a place in the Bachelor of Social Work next year. This was my third option and I still may get another option, which for me is Occupational Therapy. I choose these courses because I want to make a difference in the lives of other families with a child / children diagnosed with Autism. As a mum of seven and thr ..read more

What is a Zine? The History and description is best described here by Strummer Dundee. In October 2022 I publish my headband pattern as a downloadable Zine. Crochet Headband After watching Kate make her zine in this video: Simple ZineMy Positivity Zine I decided to give it go. I came up with eight positive affirmations to put into my Zine. I’ve formatted them so the PDF can be printed as is and decorated with pencils or other medium that won’t cause the ink to run. OR If you prefer you can download my finished Zine to print. Paper pulp back in the blender! Peter found my paper making blender. Our kitchen one had died. He was looking in the cupboard and there it was. It was sitting on the table when I saw it. Fortunately he hadn’t used it yet. After many batches of pulp making it was no longer safe for food use. It’ll be ok he said! How he never poisoned himself before I married him and cleared out his larder of out dated foods, has always baffled me. After firmly telling him, no. The blender sat on the table. It looked sad and abandoned. The last time I made paper was when I lived in Tennant Creek, 16 years ago. W ..read more
