As we continue to grapple with how to balance ongoing issues such as health & safety and social distancing in our workplaces, many organisations are turning to ongoing remote work, hybrid models, and even ongoing permanent work from home where possible. Key to this is flexibility, and the opportunities and challenges of implementing and expanding flexible work arrangements are being faced by many organisations. Join us this month as we discuss embedding and normalising flexible work with special guest David Shirley, Partner and Co-Founder of Flex We Are – RSVP on meetup. Flex We Are is a l ..read more

Remote Working Coffee Review – 3 April 2020

The challenges continue. This week all the Remote Working Group were under stricter lockdown conditions, but varying periods of time. The distractions we had discussed in our first meetup continued, the strategies for managing them became more innovative and levels of tolerance or was it resignation, were apparent. From last week, we had some homework to review our home technology infrastructures. You guessed, only a few people did it!! (Some things never change!). For those who did – the stand out vulnerability was lack of updates that had been applied to home devices. This wouldn’t have bee ..read more

Trust and Workplace Flexibility

I recently came across an interesting post on LinkedIn: You join a new company all eager to contribute so you start sharing things on slack or via email over the weekend. Don’t. It will encourage your peers to do the same and work life balance is way too important. Make a note of it and share it when you get to work Monday. The post is an easy nod-along – we’ve all been there. The over-eager contributor, the colleague who feels compelled to reply in kind to an email received on the weekend, both swept up in trying to do the ‘right’ thing at work even where it impacts our outside-of-work live ..read more

As founding members of the Digital Disruption Research Group with the University of Sydney Business School, we’re excited to share the details of our annual conference: DISRUPT.SYDNEY. This conference is a little different to most – it blends academia and practice to offer new ways of thinking about business success, individual careers, and community needs. This year’s event will focus on what it means to be successful in a world increasingly concerned with disruption, sustainability, inequality, and changing notions of work. Questions such as who and what defines success, what is success ..read more

Last week Las Vegas hosted one of the biggest technology events of the year, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). What can a consumer electronics show tell us about workplace technology? Though it has an obvious predominant consumer focus, the trends and technologies we see in the consumer space inform and impact workplace technology trends, both in the more immediate term and, particularly, in the longer term. One of the biggest impacts on the workplace – and IT departments – over the past decade has been the rapid pace of change in the consumer technology space and, along with it, employee d ..read more

Want to disrupt the workplace from within? Try breaking the fourth wall

Originally published on the Disrupt Sydney blog. Written by Natalie Hardwicke. You’ve likely heard of the “fourth wall” concept before. The term is used as a metaphor to describe the invisible or the imagined wall that separates an audience from a performance they are watching. For example, if you were to go to the theatre and watch a rendition of Hamlet, you would be watching actors perform as characters on a stage, telling a story and disclosing a world in which those characters live in. You as an audience member watch the performance through the invisible fourth wall – the veil of illusion ..read more

Source: Community Signal Podcast Last week I had the privilege of joining Patrick O’Keefe on his podcast, Community Signal, to talk about community management. To better describe the episode, here’s the description borrowed from the Community Signal show page: Think about the last time you were working on a new product, tool, or resource for your community. You probably looked through feedback that they had shared with you and compiled a list of all the needs they have. You created a “use case utopia” that you thought would be well-received by your community and internal stakeholders. As Ja ..read more

At Facebook’s F8 Conference, Facebook announced a number of significant integrations for its enterprise social network offering, Workplace. The integrations fit in three broad categories: sharing; informing; and simplifying (process). One integration likely to frustrate other vendors while simultaneously pleasing business folk is the integration with Microsoft’s SharePoint: At the same time, integrations with comms tools like BlueJeans & Zoom; Jira Cloud, and ServiceNow, alongside HR behemoth ADP to “deliver pay slips and tax information into the hands and devices of non-desk-based worke ..read more
