Looking for an affordable, low-traffic vacation this summer 2022? With inflation at record levels, and revenge travel causing congestion at seemingly every layover, that might sound like a tall tale. But, with nearly 2/3 of summer left (the meteorological season ending on September 23), there’s still plenty of time to experience someplace wonderful. And one place where avoiding the above struggles is possible: North Dakota. “Oh my gosh that’s cheap!” my New York-living friend, Tiffany, would say every time the bill came at the end of our meal. “This was so much food and so good, for THAT pric ..read more

Chasing Gratitude in Sonoma County

I travel a ton for work. As in, for the past two years I’ve spent 70% of my nights not in my home city. Because traveling, and reporting on it, is my job, I’m often on the extreme end of what people express as “needing a vacation from my vacation.” Meaning we pack so much into the time we’re away from home, that once we land back to normal life, we either have a ton to catch up on, or we feel like we now need time to relax because we went so hard while away. With that in mind, after pushing myself hard for the first half of 2022, I set up some intentional travel time with the goal of taking a ..read more

Living in Minneapolis, I’m very aware of the popular past time that is Lakes Houses. If there’s one must-have for a Minnesotan, it’s that water-view vacation home—or a friend who has one! But it’s about more than just the physical home or lake view. More so, the feeling of escaping to the country for a dip in uncrowded waters, a quiet respite to be with loved ones, or even just a walk down Main Street while eating an ice cream and all the cars stop for you…no matter where you cross. As you read, your mind might be conjuring images of the Land Of 10,000 Lakes, but have you considered North Dak ..read more

So you want to try bikepacking but don’t know where to start? I’ve been in your same shoes--whether you prefer clip-in or regular shoes. Did you have a trip cancelled due to COVID-19? Is being stuck in quarantine driving you crazy? After 3 months of various stay-at-home orders, I’ve come up with 5 Ways For Wanderlusts to Survive Quarantine 1. Visit Your State's National Parks - Every U.S. State and territory has at least 1 National Park Service site, yet most people I've met have never been to the site(s) in their own state. With the NPS open again, I recommend knocking out every NPS site in your state or within a day's round-trip drive from your home. Use this Google Map to find the sites closest to you! 2. Road Trips - Speaki ..read more

This post is sponsored advertising content by State Farm ® It’s back to school time! That might be an exclamation mark filled with excitement, trepidation, hope or dread, depending on who you are and what going back to school means. Because K-12 years can often cause anxiety and feelings of not being included, one of my summer projects has been teaming up with ,State Farm and GLSEN as they help make schools a safer and more inclusive place for LGBTQ youth. Check out the stories from this summer: 1. Using Today to Make a Better Tomorrow 2. Being Ourselves, Unapologetically 3. Changing Search Re ..read more

On April 29, 2016 I ,launched a 3-year journey to visit all 411 National Park Service sites. That number has since grown to 419,* and I'm planning to finish on April 29, 2019 three years to the minute this road trip began at the Washington Monument. While this journey has been an attempt to be the sole person to visit all NPS sites in one continuous journey, it has not been a solo project. There is no way I'd be two months and 29 sites from finishing this odyssey were it not for the thousands of people around the world who joined this journey in some way. By sharing park tips via my Facebook ..read more
