Last week we lost an icon: and RIP Baroness Betty Boothroyd. This is a tribute to an incredible woman. Baroness Betty Boothroyd was an incredible woman who had the respect of everyone around her. Reading the obituaries and listening to tributes from leading political figures who knew and worked with her, it as so obvious that she was held in the very highest esteem. From the entire House of Commons and House of Lords. This is quite remarkable in itself. Betty was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. She was from a humble background; a hard working, respectable family. And left the world as a Baroness ..read more

How NOT to demonstrate credibility

Understanding how NOT to demonstrate credibility is as important as appreciating what works well. I was reminded about this recently when I had the mis/fortune to encounter someone who managed to sabotage any credibility whilst fully believing he was the best leader in the room. Needless to say, this individual was too arrogant to recognise he could do better. However, this is an opportunity to share my observations with you, the reader, so you are aware of these mistakes. We all cope with managing nerves and difficult situations in a variety of ways. For some people, being over arrogant coul ..read more

Marketeers are increasingly recommending being a podcast guest as a very effective way of reaching new audiences; sharing your expertise and knowledge to raise awareness of your brand. But how do you get on a podcast? And how do you make the most of the opportunity including how you can engage with the audience afterwards? I shared top tips on exactly these questions. You can watch the live stream here: T ..read more

How to use our hands to make an impact

Something I am asked consistently is “How to use our hands to make an impact?” It is a really good question because we can feel awkward when we are speaking or presenting. An additional challenge is that a number of people I have worked with have received ‘Presentation Skills Training’ where they have been told to move their hands or do a specific gesture when speaking. Or alternative a “Presentations Trainer” who isn’t a specialist in presenting tells individuals not to move their hands. The challenge is that it is unnatural and speakers are more concerned about remembering the hand movement ..read more

Why a positive mindset doesn’t make you a good speaker

It is important to recognise that a positive mindset alone won’t make you a good speaker. Earlier this year I watched an incredible tennis match at Wimbledon: in the Centre Court. Rafael Nadal was playing the American Taylor Fritz. All of a sudden Nadal called the trainer. He left the court for a few minutes before returning. His movement was severely limited and in particular, his serve was impacted. It was clear to the spectators that he was in a lot of pain. We all believed Fritz would win the match – and I am sure he did too! AND many people believed Nadal would retire. His team were shout ..read more

How to be Positively Disruptive

How to be positively disruptive? That is what one of my clients asked me within the context of inspiring their team to be incredible. So what is ‘Positive Disruption? The word disruption can be perceived as being a nuisance: certainly if there were disruptive students in a lecture, it would be off putting. Likewise in a team project where one person wishes to dominate the conversation and ideas, yet doesn’t listen to anyone else’s opinion – I am sure you have been there too! The action of preventing something, especially a system, process or event from continuing as usual or as expected Defi ..read more
