Where I live it’s almost always summer. Heat prevails at any time of the year even through the rainy seasons. But nowadays it is getting a little hotter than usual and I often find myself standing in front of the living room fan. I do own a tiny one though, like a personal fan, which I keep with me in my room at all times and it is currently whirring quietly beside me at my desk; the soft humming ironically marring into my brain at almost four in the morning. At this point it’s safe to say that sleep was absent tonight. I don’t know if it will ever come in the next hour or so. I would like a ..read more

Weekend Fragments # 2

Hello friends! Let me get a little informal — I haven’t written in a long while! It feels strange. Writing on this blog has always been my outlet and through the years it has served as somewhat of a second journal to me (I keep a physical one and it’s a delight!), so, coming back to it after two months feels strangely awkward. It’s like I don’t even know what to write about… kind of. But one lovely thing I want to share is my weekend — I had such a lovely one. I thought I must begin by saying that it started off very nicely as I finally got around to watching From Up on Poppy Hill! A fri ..read more

Mid-August Reading Update

Hello! I originally wrote the following blog post around the second week of August but something came up and I wasn’t able to finish it in time for mid-August posting, my apologies! August is off to a great start, methinks. It’s only been almost two weeks and I’ve already finished four books—who would’ve thought! I remember mentioning in one of my previous posts how my academics really put me in a reading slump because most of the time, I’d rather just be studying or else I’ll feel too guilty doing anything else, especially when it’s recreational reading. But as I type this I’m realizing how ..read more

I have to admit—it was so much easier to come up with blog posts before COVID-19 happened. Back then, you had countless options: you could write about what you did or where you went last weekend, document that Japan trip you took a few days ago, or come up with a listicle on the activities you can do at home for self-care to recuperate from work/school stress. But now that we’re all spending our days mostly indoors, what else is there to talk about?  Honestly, I have no idea what to write about. Should I ramble? Probably. But I’d be lying if I said that my ramblings are the kind you’d wa ..read more

Delicate marks on our doorstep

When I think of my younger years, I remember only the sunlight. At six in the morning, occupying the windowpane, blinding and intact. It passes, tracing through my skin, to touch the floor, crawl up the walls, and intrude the corners of the living room—itching for the story it holds beneath. Sounds of the television program prevail. And I can only watch the morning quietly roll in. Quick, fetch the burnt pancakes in the kitchen. — Remember when the house burned down and you only watched and gawked? There I stood, beside you, asking if it was worth a drop of water. Your mouth spoke only of vio ..read more

Busy Days Ahead

Greetings, dear friends. Time for an update! I’ve been away for quite a while and that’s because I’ve been a tad bit busy ever since I eased back into (online) uni the 1st of March. Mostly, I really just missed interacting with everyone on here but seeing several comments on my queue when I came to check my dashboard really warmed my heart. I realized right then and there how this blog has been my safe space for the past two years, and knowing that I’ve got an online place I can go to when things sometimes get overwhelming is honestly beyond comforting. There’s heaps of research and essays I ..read more

Five years ago during rehearsals, I found myself enclosed within the confines of four tight walls: the upper left wing dressing room, painted black, with three people around me. Suddenly the walls didn’t seem as concrete anymore, instead they were liquid in form, gradually consuming my surroundings until I started to feel the numbing on my face, which slowly crept down to my shoulders and arms, until it was down to my feet—and next thing I knew I couldn’t feel my body anymore. Where was it? I thought it was slowly floating away from me, slipping away to non-existence. Then I looked down on my ..read more

Why I Quit my 2021 Reading Challenge in February

I think the title pretty much explains the situation I have here: it is only February and just a few hours ago, I hit the quit button on my 2021 Goodreads reading challenge. I was expecting there would be some sort of confirmation that read: “Congrats! You’re off the hook!” Alright, I’m half kidding. But seriously, I was waiting for a screen pop-up that would at least say that I’ve successfully opt out of the challenge (so that I could post a proof on here, yes), but there was none. I also wanted that pop-up confirmation because that would provide me a physical affirmation that I’m now free t ..read more

The Things I Talk About After Dark
CHIA | A blog uncovering lifestyle, beauty, and identity

Like most of the time I’ve found myself awake during the quiet hours of after dark, I’m currently alone with my senses yet again, listening to the not-so-faint sounds of the city below from hundreds of feet above. The hustle and bustle down those alleyways and dimly lit streets never stops, but so does my mind at 2 a.m. I’d just finished my cup of chamomile tea, expecting that it would help put me right to sleep, instead it made me reflective of how my February’s been going so far. It’s only the third day of the month but there are a few things in my mind that I’d love to talk about and share ..read more
