Length of training placement: 8 days

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Maritime Archaeology Society and MSDS Marine, will soon be undertaking a geophysical survey of a Protected Wreck site – HMS Colossus, which foundered in 1798. The survey has been supported by Historic England and will consist of magnetic and sidescan sonar surveys. The survey will be undertaken during the week 20-27 April 2024, and be based in the Isles of Scilly.

Is it the end of the 9 – 5, 5 day week? It might be at MSDS!
The 9 to 5 day is well established as the norm yet is it the best fit for employers and employees? In the UK, it has been shown we work some of the longest working hours in Europe whilst having one of the least productive economies. Maybe its time for change? This year MSDS Marine have been able to host three internships thanks to funding from Historic England as part of our Landlocked and Looking Out project. The internships offered early career professionals and students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the heritage sector – and the best bit is they were paid! Recently Asimina Porrou from MSDS Marine got to undertake two weeks of continuing professional development training with the the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar. The course was designed to offer early career professionals the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge on theoretical and practical skills in underwater archaeology. It was designed to provide participants with advanced skills and training in underwater archaeology knowledge in project planning. For the first time in the UK, artefacts including cannons are being forensically marked underwater on some of the 57 Protected Wreck Sites in English waters which have the highest level of protection due to their historic and archaeological importance
Announced by Historic England to coincide with events around the 50th anniversary of the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, the project aims to reduce the risk of heritage crime including unauthorised salvage from Protected Wreck Sites
