Significant shifts are taking place in the Canadian residential mortgage landscape, according to the latest Fall 2023 Residential Mortgage Industry Report by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. “A decline in home sales led to a deceleration in new mortgage activity in the first half of 2023. Despite this slowdown, outstanding mortgage debt continued to rise, particularly for uninsured mortgages. October was another solid month for the resale real estate market in Calgary. MLS sales of 2,171 were 17 per cent higher than a year ago and the benchmark price rose by 9.7 per cent from October 2022 to $571,600. During this year’s Canadian RE/MAX Activate conference in Vancouver, an inaugural 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and its local foundations.  The tournament occurred on September 26 at Union Basketball in Vancouver, featuring six teams, including one led by Christopher Alexander, President of RE/MAX Canada. Interprovincial in-migration continues to push homebuying activity to new limits, as local and out-of-province buyers compete for condominium product in Calgary’s heated apartment market, according to a report by RE/MAX Canada. While other residential real estate markets in the country continue to struggle due to higher interest rates and economic challenges, Calgary’s resale market is on fire these days. Coming off a record July for sales in that month and the highest benchmark price ever, activity so far in August remains robust with MLS sales and prices significantly higher than a year ago.
