Fire & Life Safety America

While many facility owners and managers are aware of the importance of the test, inspection, and maintenance of their life safety systems (fire alarm, sprinkler, suppression). Surprisingly, many are not aware that this also includes fire doors and fire dampers. An increasing number of fire marshals are requiring that fire doors and fire dampers be inspected.  Unfortunately, more times than not the facility owner and managers are often surprised by the cost of repair since the systems have never been inspected. Antifreeze in Fire Sprinkler Systems…What You Should Know
Fire & Life Safety America
by Tim Francine

By September 30, 2022, existing antifreeze solutions must be replaced by other means of freeze protection. This will undoubtedly mark the end of antifreeze in fire sprinkler systems. Designers must now clearly determine other options to continue protecting fire sprinkler systems in unheated spaces. Protecting the integrity of pipes in fire protection systems is particularly a challenge especially in regions that are subject to harsh winters. This includes structures or areas of buildings that are not climate controlled as water-filled pipes must remain above 40 F. The Issue The issue is that p ..read more

Are Your Smoke Detectors Too Sensitive?
Fire & Life Safety America
by TribleWork

Most people simply expect and assume the smoke detectors located in their facility to “just work.” Without complete, scheduled sensitivity testing, there’s no better way to determine whether or not they’re functional and protecting your facility and occupants as intended. As with any electronic system but more specifically a fire alarm system, the system components can degrade over time. Dust particles, dirt and other airborne contaminants are often the reason for a smoke detector to be too sensitive or not sensitive enough and both of these conditions can be trouble. In the event of an emerge ..read more

Fire Pump Test Frequencies: What You Need to Know
Fire & Life Safety America
by TribleWork

In recent editions of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 25, the requirements for no-flow (churn) test frequencies have changed for electric motor driven fire pumps (only). Diesel engine driven fire pumps have always been required to run weekly for 30 minutes. This allows the engine to establish a running speed and confirm that no problems exist such as overheating or lack of combustion air for the engine. As always, it is best to observe problems during periodic testing than to discover them forensically after a catastrophic event. Running the diesel engine weekly for 30 minutes also ..read more

Stingy Jack and the Pumpkin Are pumpkins a fruit or a vegetable? If you guessed fruit (which I did not), it is because fruits are a seed-bearing structure and pumpkins contain what I best describe as yucky stuff along with plenty of seeds so there you have it…a pumpkin is a fruit (though I will never eat it as a fruit…just sayin’).    The tradition of carving out a Pumpkin (aka fruit) dates back to a method used by the Celts to ward off evil spirits and light the way for good spirits to visit on that one night known as Halloween. They would then hollow out turnips (later to become p ..read more
