Your Game

What is one thing that comes naturally to you? That thing is likely your strength or natural talent. Chances are you don’t think about it all that often. You just do it. When I was playing soccer at USD, my natural assets were that I was fast, strong, and tall.  I scored a lot of goals with headers. My ball skills weren’t extraordinary, but they didn’t need to be. My job was to put the ball in the net. When scouts were watching our game, or we were playing a big competitor like USC, I would sometimes try to play like the other girls using fancy ball skills. That wasn’t my game at all! Nee ..read more

Clutter

To get ready for summer, I did a lot of spring cleaning. Until I started emptying the shelves and letting go of stuff we don’t use, I didn’t see all the clutter. There was WAY more than I realized! From this experience, my family recognized the need to make a few changes around what we buy and bring into our home. We have always made purchases based on what we value. Now, we are refining our purchases to buy items we absolutely LOVE such as the Vitamix we have used nearly every day for the last 10 years. We are nearly halfway through 2021 after an unforgettable year.  Chances ar ..read more

Worry

Worry can quickly creep in and consume our thoughts. I know from experience. When I bought my first car, a used Honda, I was afraid that I bought a lemon. I worried it would breakdown on the freeway while I was in college and I would have to push it to the shoulder. (This was before everyone had a cellphone.) Looking back, all that worry took up mind space and time from things I really enjoyed. All the recent news about the new tax proposals has led to sensational headlines about tax hikes. I think it is a good idea to keep things in perspective (and not worry), because they are only proposals ..read more

How are you feeling this spring? To me, this spring season feels a bit like a hangover. All the signs are here that it's time to get going: flowers are blooming, the birds are singing early in the morning. Yet, I am have found it to be more challenging this year to align with the momentum of nature.  That is one of the reasons why, last month, I took a staycation to just sit, sip tea, go inward, and not do much of anything. It was challenging. At first, I was restless and caught myself driving to the office to work. By the third week, I had slowed down and soon the exhausti ..read more

Are you wondering which direction the market is heading?  If so, you’re not alone. Since the age of 19, I’ve been a student of investment markets.  It is something about the change in market prices, investor behavior, and opportunities that intrigue me. I say student because there is always something to learn and market cycles are almost never the same.   If experience has taught me anything, bull markets and bear markets tend to last longer than people think they should.  The bear market of 2007-2008 was very long for many financial professionals and left a lasting im ..read more

My Best Investment

While I have been fortunate with my financial investments, such as my home and retirement account, one of my best investments was money I spent on an unforgettable experience. I moved to Malaga, Spain when I was 25. I had a wonderful time learning Spanish, making friends from all over the world, and traveling throughout southern Europe (everything is so close compared to the US). It was awesome! I really love the history and culture of Europe. “Old” has such a different meaning there. Even the difficult times had a silver lining. Towards the end of my stay, I caught the European flu and was si ..read more

Sticky Notes

When does inspiration come to you? For me, it can come when I’m driving, running, making dinner, or (my least favorite) right before I go to sleep. It almost never comes when I am sitting at my computer. There are sticky notes with ideas scribbled on them all over our house, my car and in my purse.  Everyone in my family knows if they see a sticky note with my handwriting, they make sure to put it in my purse or next to my phone. It never belongs in the garbage!  Some days, the notes don’t make perfect sense and I’m not sure where they land in the puzzle. However, I take th ..read more

Supply & Demand

Why do prices increase? It typically results from demand outstripping supply. Let me give you a personal example. This past weekend, we celebrated our daughter Tessa’s 6th birthday. We had family in town and cousins over for a sleepover. There wasn’t much rest, but I absolutely love seeing the joy on all of the kids’ faces.  To keep the kids entertained, and on our property, we had to get creative. Buying stuff to store in our garage is the least of my desires but with Covid, all options were on the table. We bought a waterslide jump house bouncy – and the kids loved it.  W ..read more

Disconnected

There are few words that can describe the events of 2020. However, I think that disconnected goes a long way towards describing the last few weeks. The first is the great disconnect within the human race. It is impossible not to feel affected by the loss of George Floyd and other Black lives. These last two weeks have deepened my awareness about BIPOC. I have been learning and listening by reading books, joining webinars led by Black leaders and talking with BIPOC friends. While I feel that I have always viewed all humans as equals, I realize that it is not enough. I am grieving. I am committe ..read more
