Existence consists of variables, all are manifest in balance. How we understand and appreciate these many variables changes from person to person, some can create positive from the negative, some can find beauty in the darkest of subjects, one such person is Adam Burke. On his website Adam explains his work, stating “I want to express aspects of the world that are less noticed, stigmatized, or considered strange or grotesque. I want to be able to express the beauty, or at least the fascination that I find in these things.” I first came across his paintings and illustrations through the medium ..read more

Freaky Folklore: Mari Lwyd
Deeper-Shades
by Mikehl Nokturum

The world is full of traditions and folklore, most are fairly commonplace nowadays which makes them so traditional. Local to the South Wales area the Mari Lwyd is believed to be a pre Christian tradition occurring around yuletide. It involves a horses skull, a troop of singing locals and a battle of wits. Folklorist E. C. Cawte theorises that the term had derived from "Grey Mare", hence the use of a horses skull ..read more

If you talk to anyone about horror chances are it was zombies, vampires or werewolves that started them on that path. With zombies and vampires dominating horror culture for decades it was actually the werewolf myth that predates them all. Now you have all heard of the witch trials that began around 1450, more famously the Salem witch trials of 1692, believe it or not werewolf trials also occured and even earlier at that, with the accused tried for shape-shifting into a wild creature to feast on any being they come across. As with the witch trials it was difficult to provide physical evidence ..read more

Leonardo Da Vinci Exhibition

Recently I visited my local museum for my fill of culture and was delighted to discover there was an exhibition dedicated to the drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci. The level of detail in his sketches and drawings was to be admired and respected, I couldn’t help but gaze with almost steadfast concentration at images of the skeletal frame, intricately crafted reproductions of human muscle structure and the human form. On a non Da Vinci note, I also took a photograph of one of my favourite statues, depicting Perseus holding the decapitated head of Medusa after successfully slaying her in combat. Give ..read more

Since the 1980’s Alton Towers has been one of the U.K.’s biggest and most visited theme park, but the history of the manor and the grounds it inhabits starts as far back as 1000 years ago. The theme of the park is heavily influences by horror and scary stories and one such story is that of the chained oak. There are many reports of haunted activity at Alton Towers which will most certainly have played a part in how the atmosphere of the now renowned theme park was conceived. The tale of the chained oak is now told a hundred times a day as the narrative of the experience ride Hex, but as sourc ..read more
