After sewing this dress for my talent round for the Cooly Rocks On Pinup Pageant, I put her on my mannequin, took a step back and then immediately grabbed new fabric and started making her again. Having wanted to make a shirt dress for well over two years, my first attempt using Simplicity R10646/S9164 gave me the confidence boost I needed and I honestly loved how it turned out on my first attempt. To take a break from pageant sewing, I wanted to make something a bit more fun and casual using Simplicity R10646 again and thus, here we are for another pattern review. Continuing on with my Cooly Rocks On Pinup Pageant sewing saga, find part one/day wear sewing post here, today we are met with part two and how I made my talent round outfit. What’s the talent I did on stage you ask? Wallpapering. Yes, I did wallpapering for three minutes on stage at one of the biggest pinup pageants in Australia which means my outfit also had to be just as ridiculous. For my talent round, I wanted to go for a more typical 50’s house dress as I pictured it as a lady of the house decorating her home which landed me upon Simplicity R10646 which was a delightful shirt dress. Something is rotten in the state of Golden Hollywood The 1950s might be remembered for poodle skirts, drive-in movies, and rock and roll, but beneath the seemingly wholesome surface, Hollywood was churning with scandals that captivated and shocked the public. Much like today, the Golden era of Hollywood was rife with scandalous celebrity behaviour and although it seemed like a time of good fun and innocence, it was far the wholesome image Hollywood wanted to portray. Here are five of the most notorious celebrity controversies that rocked the era: 1. Charlie Chaplin’s Communist Controversy (195 ..read more

I’m not a huge designer brand kind of gal but I do appreciate some of the lovely fabrics, styles and embellishments that designer brands use. I’ve always had a soft spot for Dolce and Gabbana but I’ve recently learnt about some very unethical behaviour and comments they have shared which has turned me off actually buying them. During a recent internet browse, I stumbled upon this dress and I instantly fell in love with it. And then I saw the price. And the brand. Oh bugger. It was a simple summer dress, and about $2700 from Dolce and Gabbana and despite being designer, it was not worth anywher ..read more

Third times the charm right? It’s been a while since I’ve done a Pinup Pageant Recap as I’ve taken a bit of a break for a little while due to burnout and mental health but why not get right back into the pageant world and partake in one of the biggest pinup pageants in Australia, the Cooly Rocks On Pinup Pageant for 2024. Having already done this pageant twice before, read about my previous experiences here, I knew what I was getting myself into but compared to my previous attempt back in 2021, this year’s pageant formula would be a little different. For the last few years, Cooly Rocks On has ..read more

I know I said I wouldn’t sew this pattern again so soon but … I just had to! Way back in 2019 I went to my first ever Cooly Rocks On in Coolangatta and let me tell you, it was absolutely freezing. To be fair, a week and a half before the pageant I caught the plague and spent a week in bed wishing for death to be swift and merciful so I may have been feeling the cold a little more than most but the few cardigans I brought didn’t prepare me at all for the icy blasts. I ended up buying a coat and a hot water bottle because I was struggling so much and ever since that year, I always pack super war ..read more

Simple Pinup Beauty for the Everyday For quite some time I’ve been asked to share my pinup makeup routine which has honestly made me a little nervous. I am, in no way shape or form, a makeup artist and my skills are far from those of a professional. I only got into makeup once I was well into college and most of what I learnt came from old YouTube tutorials and loads of practice. Over the years, I have developed a simple makeup look which I can adjust for daily wear, pageants/fancy events and photoshoots; I am very excited and also nervous to share it with you today. To prep my skin, I always ..read more
