The Nutshell times wrote a beautiful blog about the ” plavi voz “, translated as ” the blue train ” which used to be the train of Josip Broz Tito, the leader of Yugoslavia. It is almost the end of the year so it is time for the traditional year reviews. I start with an alternative 2018 year review for Belgrade, the dynamic capital of Serbia and the place where I live. When I captured the photo above I thought it was a historic moment: it was at one day at the beginning of this year when they started to remove the cars illegally parked in front of the police station at Savska street. Later it was clear why: a couple of cars with state officials passed. Not much later the cars were parked back again and never left….. The hope for returning of the rule of law in fr ..read more

This iconic day on the calendar of most Serbs is a treat not to be missed –besides offering real insight into Serbian tradition and life. In Serbian Orthodoxy, each family has a patron saint who is passed down from generation to generation through the male line. Each saint also has his or her own day. When your family’s saint’s day comes round, you celebrate this day, which is called a slava in Serbian. A slava is an old tradition and is typically Serbian. It is not celebrated in other Orthodox countries, like Russ ..read more

Đorđe Vukosavljević died exactly 100 years around 02h30 AM on 22nd January 1919 in a Prisoners of War camp in Nieuw-Milligen in the municipality of Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. He was a Serbian WWI soldier and captured in 1915 while the Serbian army was retreating towards the Greek island of Corfu. When we started to research the fate of the 91 Serbian WWI soldiers who died in the Netherlands we were grateful that we got in contact with the great-grand daughter of Đorđe. She shared pictures and letters with us with gave us an insight in the live of a Serbian WWI PoW. 30/06/1918: Dear L ..read more
