The Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, has announced the country will now regulate cannabis through legislation rather than re-listing it as a narcotic, marking a swift U-turn from plans to re-criminalise the drug. Thailand decriminalised cannabis in 2022 by removing it from a list of illegal narcotics, leading to a boom industry that saw dispensaries open in the thousands across the country. After less than two years, the government, led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, announced it would add cannabis back onto the list of narcotics, re-criminalising production, consum ..read more

The independent drug policy charity Transform has launched a £50,000 crowdfunder to campaign for the legalisation of cannabis in the UK. Founded in 1996, Transform promotes drug policy reform in the UK and across the world. The charity has published numerous reports and publications on how to regulate legal markets for the non-medical use of cannabis safely. Transform states that the ongoing legalisation of cannabis in other countries, such as Germany, provides an opportunity to highlight the failures of cannabis prohibition in the UK. The unregulated cannabis market, the charity says, puts th ..read more

The Czech Government is pressing ahead with plans to launch Europe’s first fully legal commercial cannabis market, similar to those seen in Canada and many parts of the US. The use, possession and cultivation (for personal use) of cannabis were decriminalised in 2010 while sale and importation are still strictly forbidden and can result in a prison sentence. Czechia was also one of the first countries in Europe to permit a legal medicinal cannabis market, patients began to be issued their prescriptions in 2013. The plan, rev ..read more

Catalonian authorities have taken further steps towards their goal of closing all the cannabis clubs in Barcelona last week, as thirty venues across the city received notices ordering them to shut their doors until further notice. Deputy mayor and councillor for security, Albert Batlle announced his plans during a speech in the last plenary session of 2023 when he said he was going to “put an end [to cannabis social clubs],” explaining that the policy needed to be implemented “with legal certainty, with rigour, and without flaws caused by haste.” Since then the City Council have carried out ra ..read more

In recent years, the world has seen a general loosening of cannabis laws, concerning both medicinal and recreational use of the drug. “60 for a 3.5, Q’s for 100 real Cali! Going rapid, (fire emoji, american flag emoji, leaf emoji) ask for strains!”   “Eazy- got the flavours of flavours in. Gelato X Skittles. Girl Scout. Mac1. In 2024, the UK is awash with “Cali” weed; top-of-the-line premium crops supposedly imported straight from the sun-kissed Emerald Triangle and flogged across greyer pastures. by Kevin Dinneen

In 2022 the Southeast Asian country of Thailand shocked the world by removing cannabis from its list of controlled narcotics. The ruling created a legal vacuum – dispensaries opened up on ‘every corner’ in Bangkok and tourists and locals alike were smoking joints in public and newly opened cannabis clubs. After less than two years, Thailand’s cannabis laws are again facing upheaval. After a general election in May 2023 brought about a new Prime Minister, the government plans to criminalise cannabis again. A government committee has won a vote to reclassify cannabis and hemp back to a ‘Category ..read more
