One Final Quick Note…

We made a pretty strategic choice to mostly ignore the setups later on in the week today. It’s still a little early to get into specifics on any given day and I think some details are still subject to change. But things do still look on track with daily severe weather risks starting tomorrow and lasting into the weekend on the South-Central Plains. We’ll have a forecast out tomorrow for the marginal risk and a more detailed look-ahead at the week to come. Stay tuned. The post One Final Quick Note… appeared first on Tornado Titans ..read more

We’re Running At/Just Below Average
Tornado Titans
by Tornado Titans

If you live on the Plains, aka the ‘traditional’ Tornado Alley, you would feel that this year is anything but average with few tornadoes thus far. But if you are a resident of the Midwest, particularly from Illinois to Ohio, you definitely feel like you are in the midst of a historically active season. Thanks to that activity over the Midwest, we are running very close to average in terms of tornado count across the whole country. Given the pattern ahead, it is likely we stick at least to near average with more tornadoes over the Plains likely ahead — but an above-average May would mean we are ..read more

When you get to the heart of Spring, some days that look very iffy end up producing the storm of the year photographically. On this day, the wind shear was just so very questionable almost the entire day — but a very small pocket of enhanced winds in the mid-levels moved over the area this Western Kansas supercell was churning over and it was like the storm pushed a button to look epic. The minute difference between seeing a so-so storm and an epic storm on this day was literally the storm happening to form 30 miles north of where others did. When a storm sculpts out with incredible structure ..read more

The Details Will Be Critical, But This Looks Like a Busy Week
Tornado Titans
by Tornado Titans
2d ago
You probably don’t need to hear this, but the details will be absolutely critical in terms of how the upcoming week goes in terms of severe weather. But on the surface, this looks like a very busy week ahead, with risks in the SC Plains starting on Tuesday and lasting through the weekend and into next week. The Big Picture The driving force behind our upcoming pattern is a pair of storm systems that will move into the middle of the country. The first will arrive on Thursday, and the second will arrive a bit later. The first system is small, compact, and relatively fast-moving on Thursday. Moi ..read more

It looks like our string of severe weather threats may get going on Tuesday. Parts of the Southern Plains may experience marginally severe thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with potential for strong wind gusts and hail. Locations: Southern Plains: Specifically northwest Texas and southwestern Oklahoma. Threats: Wind Gusts and Hail: Isolated severe threats with the capability of producing strong wind gusts and hail in the forecast area. Timing: Southern Plains: Throughout Tuesday, with a focus on the afternoon and evening as temperatures rise and instability increases. Discu ..read more

A Rainy Day With Some Severe Storms in Central Texas
Tornado Titans
by Tornado Titans
3d ago
Today is a classic marginal, very low-end day for severe storms across the region. The main story will be the noisy storms and heavy rain across much of Northern Texas. In true washout fashion, it’s likely that any outdoor activities need to be put on hold. Further south, a few storms could produce some large hail and there is a non-zero tornado risk. While wind shear and instability aren’t very high, a storm could acquire some rotation briefly. This is a great day for most storm chasers to rest, and wait out the prime time stuff late next week. You Want Nuts? Let’s Get Nuts
Tornado Titans

Models are consistent with a solution that implies sustained W and SW flow over a moist airmass in Tornado Alley starting late next week. This is a classic setup for multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms over several days.  It’s hard to pin down too many specifics right now, as there is a decent model spread among members. However, it does seem likely that we will see multiple successive severe weather risks of varying degrees starting Wednesday or Thursday of next week. Right now, the most pressing days of the next week look to be Friday through Sunday. However, models disagree ab ..read more
