A softcover version of After the Coal Dust is now available. The book contains the same content as the hard cover versions (which are now, unfortunately, out of print) and is in A4 format with 130 pages. The book (ISBN 9781838159696) is priced at £22 and can be ordered from our publications page. The order form is for customers in the UK and PayPal only currently, but anyone outside the…

The original hardcover versions of ‘After the Coal Dust‘ are now, unfortunately, out of print and it is very unlikely that there’ll be any further copies available in either the 12inch or 8inch versions. The cost of printing has soared since the original release and it doesn’t seem viable now to sell the book at a reasonable price. We always wanted to make After the Coal Dust as affordable as…

Just thought I’d share a review I received for my recent Zoom talk to Barnstaple Photographic Club. It’s always difficult to gauge reaction over Zoom, so it was nice to receive the following. Dear John, Further to the thanks from our Chairman, Pete, last night, on behalf of the committee and all the club members, may I formally thank you very much for your presentation…

I think I might be an incredibly dull person. I don’t eat meat; I don’t drink and I’ve never had a cigarette in my life. And yet I seem to have accrued a considerable number of pictures of smokers and, more recently, ‘vapers’. I don’t really see the appeal of the smell of nicotine and tobacco (or unicorn sweat, or whatever flavours are in vogue for the vapers) but I have to admit that smoke…

Last year I was asked to write an article on After the Coal Dust for Yorkshire History & Heritage Magazine. The full article is featured below. If we were to do an internet search on, let’s say, Castleford, we’d undoubtedly get references to rugby. If we scrolled down far enough on the results, Henry Moore might get a mention. We might even get some comments about it being a historic…

I seem to have taken fewer photographs this year. I’m not sure why, a lack of opportunities or lack of motivation? Anyway, here’s the world’s most depressing calendar for…

I never really set out to create the ‘100 Faces Project’. All I really do is wander around and point a camera in the general direction of strangers on the street. It was all just street photography to me; a continuation of After the Coal Dust. It was only when I began to notice that I’d been far closer to some people than I realised. They were more like ‘portraits’ in some ways than…

We have flawless skin and perfect teeth. We have wide and sparkling eyes. Sometimes we have rabbit ears and unicorn horns. Mirrors lie to us. We are in exotic locations eating expensive meals. We exist on 6inch screens. This is our social media life. There are more ‘photographs’ (although the definition is increasingly vague) taken of us than ever before. There are fewer photographs taken of…

A great review of ‘After the Coal Dust’ from the Progressive Festival, Milan. After The Coal Dust Review Margaret Thatcher’s conservative government, with their forced closures of coal mines and privatisation, caused an enormous social shock, which was met with indignation across the media and throughout society. These photographs of John and Bridget Gill are full of that coal dust.
