Android TV: "Am I a joke to you?" Listen up, streaming nerds: if you really want to make the best out of your low-cost, cord-cutting entertainment setup, you'll need to pour at least ten grand into an awesome home theater setup. Which won't help at all if your streaming service of choice doesn't actually support all of that eye-melting hi-fi tech. So what took y'all so long, Hulu? Whatever. It took a while, but Hulu now supports high dynamic range for more vivid color presentation, on top of 4K resolution and surround sound that were already supported. New widgets? What is this, 2013? Look, watching a never-ending stream of television episodes probably isn't great for you. But streaming services basically live on that behavior, so they're not gonna judge you for it. In fact, they'd like you to binge a little more. To that end, Hulu is adding a couple of widgets to its Android app. New widgets! In the Year of our Lord 2021! I wonder what got them thinking about those again? The 'skip intro' button for TV shows is finally here There are plenty of TV shows with wonderful intros. But even the best ones will grate on you if you're watching your seventh episode on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Hulu realizes this, and has added a "skip intro" button to its interface on Android, as it's had on the web and at least some smart TV platforms for over a year. This is where I'd show you screenshots of the skip intro button running on my phone. An advertisement disguised as a reality series Samsung really wants you to know that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has, in its opinion, the best camera you can buy on a smartphone today. These days, it's not enough for the phone's photography capabilities to be praised in reviews. You have to meet with consumers on their level, and in 2021, what do ordinary people love more than an overabundance of streaming services? That's why Samsung is teaming up with Hulu to produce an original reality show called Exposure, in which competitors will be given photography challenges focused around shooting with — y ..read more

Hulu's annoying 720p cap for Android TV is finally getting lifted

First signs seen on 2019 Nvidia Shield boxes Hulu streams 4K content to Apple TV, Fire TV, and Chromecast Ultra owners, but it has never raised the resolution cap beyond 720p for most with Android TV. Some reports, however, indicate that things may be taking a step up for the forlorn platform. Hulu's support pages don't exactly make it clear that most if not all Android TVs up to this point have only been able to stream its content at 720p. Just in time for holiday movie season Watching movies together is one of the best parts of the holidays, but this simple activity could prove much more difficult this season thanks to COVID-19. Last year's Black Friday deal returns With the launch of services like CBS All Access, Peacock, and Disney+, Hulu isn't quite the definitive place to watch every TV show you want anymore. However, it does still have a sizable catalog of stuff to watch from many different networks (plus a few decent exclusive movies/shows), and now you can enjoy all of it for $2/mo with Hulu's Black Friday offer. Those of you with excellent memories (can't relate) might recall Hulu offered the same exact discount last year. Hulu Live TV is now just as expensive as YouTube TV To quote Batman, "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain." That certainly applies to TV streaming services, which all started as cheaper alternatives to cable, but later became just as expensive as cable with the rising costs of bundling channels. YouTube TV recently increased its monthly cost to $65, and now Hulu's live TV option is following suit. Starting December 18th, the 'Hulu + Live TV' subscription by Hulu will increase in cost from $54.99/mo to $64.99/mo, and the option for ad-free Hulu str ..read more
