Time again for another blog status update post. Dropping Google ads (again) For those visiting my site with their ad blocker turned off, you’ll notice I’ve turned off Google ads, at least for now. Google’s own downsides aside, there’s also that the amount of revenue from Google ads has declined, even by my meager standards. I’d sometimes meet Google’s $100 minimum payout level about once a year (if lucky). However, at the current rate, I wasn’t meeting even that. Thus, I figured I’d save on the site code/load speed and ditch Google’s ads for now. If interested in supporting my site financially ..read more

What are Warner Bros.’ biggest media franchises?

Warner Bros. has seen plenty of changes over the past 100 years, including passing through multiple owners (twice in just the past decade). While Warner Bros. Discovery has plenty of assets (CNN, TNT, etc.), it’s the company’s franchises that stand out. Especially recently, given the questionable decision making by WB CEO David Zaslav and the company’s poor performance. Below’s a list of the top 10 Warner Bros. franchises of all time, based on revenue figures from Wikipedia. The figures listed are for the franchises’ total earnings since day one, and thus includes revenue earned before or outs ..read more

The online writer/creator world, including yours truly, isn’t pleased with the latest artificial intelligence (AI) related news. Tech site 404 Media reports that Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and Tumblr, plans to sell user data to AI companies OpenAI and Midjourney. Self-hosted WordPress sites (like mine… the “WordPress.org” version of WordPress) aren’t affected by Automattic’s deal; as far as I can tell, Automattic’s Jetpack plug-in shouldn’t affect users either. The only bone thrown to WordPress.com and Tumblr users is an opt out feature. Comic creator Greg Pak lists the instr ..read more

Leap Day in cartoons

Facebook Tumblr Email February 29 brings that quadrennial leap year-defining day, Leap Day. More specifically (as NPR explains), leap years happen in years divisible by 4, but not in years divisible by 100 (unless the year’s divisible by 400). So 2000 was a leap year, but not 1900 or 2100. Several famous figures call Leap Day their birthday, such as rapper Ja Rule. Leap Day also extends to the world of comics and animation, as shown in the examples below. Superman From “World’s Finest Comics” #235 (January 1976). Art by Dick Dillin. (DC Comics) Given comics’ inconsistency, the most famous supe ..read more

Facebook Tumblr Email Major physical media news was announced this week. Disney and Sony have entered in a deal in which Sony will handle all DVD and Blu-ray production, marketing, and distribution for Disney in the United States and Canada. Disney’s also shutting down its Disney Movie Club service, which gives subscribers access to obscure Disney films and TV shows that wouldn’t get a DVD or Blu-ray release otherwise. (The Disney Movie Club released the 2000s animated series “The Weekenders” on two DVD volume sets, for instance.) A big shift for Disney and home video “Avengers Movie” by Jeepe ..read more
