Tesla is always in the news. You could say that with his grip on social media, Tesla’s founder, Elon Musk, is the news. But look beyond the space rocket, Musk’s astronomical salary, the Cybertruck, and plans for robotaxis, and you still have cars that kick-started the shift to EVs. First, there was the Tesla Roadster, then the Model S and the Model X. In the UK, we can currently lease the Tesla Model 3 and the Model Y. Since they’ve been on sale since 2019 and 2021, respectively, plenty of new competition has appeared – hence price cuts and discounts – but the fact remains that Teslas are ..read more

Would the Tesla Cybertruck work on salary sacrifice?
Fleet Alliance

This is an interesting question: can you get the Tesla Cybertruck on a salary sacrifice scheme from Fleet Alliance? Current answer is, alas, no. But that didn’t stop Fleet Alliance addressing the issue at the Tesla Centre Glasgow where the dramatically shaped pickup truck was on display at the beginning of June as part of a tour of the UK. The Cybertruck is the latest product from Elon Musk’s Tesla empire, but is currently only on sale in America where it is manufactured in Austin, Texas. Two things are notable about the Cybertruck. The first is its odd, angular design. Boxy and dull from the ..read more

BYD Seal review: Can it swim with the big fish?
Fleet Alliance
by Kevin Blackmore

The Tesla Model 3 has long been the go-to EV for those looking for an executive-level saloon with decent range. That might be about to change as Chinese automaker BYD (Build Your Dreams) attempts to upset the status quo with its oddly named competitor, the Seal. The Fleet Alliance team recently experienced the Seal firsthand, with the aim of finding out if it’s a serious rival to the Model 3. Spoiler alert—it’s a serious contender if you can see past the name (and you should). Background Since UK drivers first started taking delivery of the Model 3 in 2019, it’s been a regular fixture on bests ..read more

Gardens can bring tranquillity and peace, a place to escape life’s frantic pace, somewhere to find mental quietude. It’s certainly one of the themes of this week’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the most important flower show in the gardener’s calendar. But gardens don’t have to be showpieces – magnificent though some of those competition spaces are at RHS Chelsea – to provide personal sanctuary. But gardens do require constant attention – step forward the Fleet Alliance Benefits and Social (FABS) team of volunteers to help bring some order back to the gardens of Beatson Cancer Charity with some pru ..read more

Which is better – cash allowance or salary sacrifice?
Fleet Alliance
by Charlie Strand

The choice between a car allowance and salary sacrifice comes down to a balance of flexibility and value. A cash allowance provides flexibility but offers less value. Salary sacrifice has a more restricted range of choices, but offers the best value, particularly when sourcing a new car. Here’s why.   The hidden costs of a cash allowance When you opt for a cash allowance, you can spend your payments on your choice of vehicle (subject to company rules on the type of car you can drive if you need it for occasional business use), or potentially something else entirely. However, this flexibil ..read more

How does benefit-in-kind affect electric cars?
Fleet Alliance
by Charlie Strand

If you have a company car that is available for private use, including commuting, then it becomes liable for company car tax as a so-called ‘benefit-in-kind’. How much you pay for this benefit is based on the car’s carbon dioxide emissions, so that drivers of the lowest polluting cars pay least tax. With more than one million electric cars on the road, the taxman wants them to start paying their way, but the good news is that it will cost drivers a fraction of what they would pay if they stayed in a diesel or petrol equivalent. Drivers pay company car tax on a percentage of the taxable value o ..read more

How does salary sacrifice work for a car?
Fleet Alliance
by Charlie Strand

Salary sacrifice for a car is exactly the same as any other employee benefit. You exchange some of your salary for a benefit: gym membership; daycare nursery vouchers;  technology equipment; and so on. You could buy any of these items with your take home salary, of course. But the advantage of salary sacrifice is that you pay for these items with your gross salary – that’s the amount before tax and National Insurance is deducted – and then the reduced amount of gross salary is then subject to these taxes. Overall you pay less for the benefit thanks to the tax deductions. Car salary sacrif ..read more
