Fire & First Aid: What’s In My Kit

Set Some Stuff On Fire And Save Some Lives! I have to admit something.  I don’t even like hiking or backpacking or camping.  I’ve been building this solid base of knowledge over the last few years for one real reason: to feed my pyromania habit.  Alas, I have mastered fire.  Man’s greatest discovery.  Maybe. Häagen-Dazs is up there too. Anyway.  Last month I went over what I carry in my pack for winter hikes.  Two of the most important pieces in my pack were the fire kit and first aid kit.  As a rookie hiker, I knew these were things I should have ..read more

A Cheap Attempt At Blog Traffic? Or A Way To Promote My Buddies? One thing is for sure, this is not a blog post for folks who don’t care about hiking.  I know sometimes some of you come here to entertain me, to support me and whatnot.  But truthfully, this one is isn’t for you if you aren’t in to watching videos of hiking, backpacking, camping and gear.  Because that is literally all this is. Since becoming a hiker, YouTube, and the friends that have come along with it, has been a  constant source of inspiration, learning and answered questions for me.  Not only have ..read more

Whatcha Got In That Winter Bag, Kid!? So we’re still in the middle of a god damn pandemic.  You’re supposed to stay home.  Hanging out with your friends is illegal.  Going to any small businesses is illegal.  You can’t eat out at restaurants, you can’t do a whole lot of your favorite activities.  So, going outside and meandering about may be your only option.  So you’ve decided you wanna start some winter hiking.  And then you get out there and realize you’re completely not equipped.  You see folks with all kinds of gadgets and gear – and you a ..read more

Yeah, We're Doing This If you didn’t know, Joe Wilderness has got kitchen skills.  We’re going to get in to my favorite granola to eat as a pre-hike breakfast.  It’s got that good stuff to keep you going all morning and all day.  And all night, if you know what I mean……night hiking.  Gives you energy galore for some night hiking.  Before we get in to it, I just gotta get the vibe right. Repeat All Tracks Wu Tang has got my kitchen boomin’.  Lauren’s upstairs watching some slick-haired politician lie through his teeth.  I’m ready to get my hands in to s ..read more

Well, What Else Is There To Do? I know we’re just starting, but hold on.  I’m steady re-dialing The Spicy Pearl as I type.  Trying to get me some RibFest/Community Cookout….. Yeah, I got you waiting on me. False Start Now, where was I?  Right, complete system reboot.  It’s been a while since I’ve dusted this keyboard off.  Gotta do a systems check to see if everything is in working order: //initialize/complete.system.reboot//end.task Q.W.E.R.T.Y. QWERTY. Keyboard, check. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.  Words in brain, typing abilities, check. Po ..read more

It’s June 1st, 2020 and I just mowed my lawn in the rain. I’m glad it’s raining because I have slow tears rolling down my cheeks. Not the tears of joy I should be experiencing. Two days ago I lead my hiking team to a major 50km victory, raising major coin for our local food bank. We pushed ourselves physically, mentally and gave every ounce of everything we had to succeed. But I can’t even spend more than a few seconds thinking about it without my thoughts drifting to real world events and the helplessness I feel. It’s September, 1988. My first day of kindergarten. My mom drops me off. Walk ..read more

Let's Keep It Really, Really, Real And Drop Some Disclaimers In Here Too So, yeah, let’s be real.  There are zero parts of me that started this blog, an Instagram or a Facebook page in order to get free stuff.  Everyone who knows me knows I’m cheap.  So yeah, I’m not going to argue with free stuff, but it’s just not part of my M.O. When a company called KÜHL reached out to me in December (a first, by the way) offering some free gear for me to test ..read more

The Year Starts Off With The Snazziest Yet Lauren Joins Me For A Sunrise Hike To Remember Who knew?  It turns out I write a hiking blog.  It’s been a little while, I almost forgot all about it.   I kid, of course.  But seriously, between having a blast on vacation and putting some serious focus in to getting a) the YouTube Channel up and running and b) the new pages on the blog created and posted, I wasn’t sure I’d even have a chance to WRITE about my sunrise trek of Mt. Batur.  Speaking of those new p ..read more

ADK Chapter 12: Halftime

Not the best Halftime show ever. But better than Elvis Presto. And Maroon 5. I’m reading a book right now that a dude at work let me borrow.  It’s by Adam Shoalts, a Canadian explorer looking to explore rivers waaaay up North that have never been explored before.  In it he says “If there’s one lesson to be gleaned from the history of exploration, it’s that nothing ever goes according to plan.”  I feel like I’ve been learning this lesson throughout this whole hiking thing over the past year and a half.  But, likely, no m ..read more

Yeah, you read that right. Lasik, baby. Before I tell you why Lasik is what lead to me becoming an adventurer, how about that frickin waterfall?  Our hike of Sawteeth Mountain, Pyramid Peak, Gothics Mountain and Armstrong Mountain went super well.  There were many highlights throughout the day, but towards the end we found this waterfall.  It was likely the highlight of the whole day for me.  It was huge.  And despite having about 90mins to 2 hours left to hike back to the car, I went with my gut reaction – shower in tha ..read more
