Hi! I am Lydia, and about to become a Homeschool Mom for the first (official) time. I’ve been considering this decision for a decade, and my husband bore with me through a few months of serious fence-walking before we decided, together, to dive in now. Our forms are in–curriculum on the shelf–year scheduled out–and we’re in the process of putting together our space and our brains to step into homeschooling well. Though COVID-19 is not our primary reason for homeschooling, it happens to be a nice year to not be sending our three boys to school. I know that for many of you, the reality of naviga ..read more

Cover Reveal for “The Colors Danced”

A few months ago, I polled my Facebook audience for their feedback about cover art as I moved toward completion of my first picture book, “The Colors Danced.” I received a surprising amount of commentary–thank you!–and tried lots of tweaks and changes based on the advice. And then I went back to the drawing board. Which, for this paper-cutting artist, is really the “x-acto board.” You see, I had been pursuing the full-color spread from the final page of the story as the cover art, because it is the most typical of a children’s book cover. But I just didn’t feel it represented the book well, ar ..read more

Family Quality Time… Doesn’t have to go the way you planned it

My youngest son watched some Curious George while I put the baby down for her nap. George built a tree house. Naturally, Lem wanted to build a tree house. I had to break it to him that we couldn’t build a REAL tree house right then. I COULD get out paper and popsicle sticks and we could do a tree house craft. He was (surprisingly) okay with that, thank heaven. So I pulled out white paper, green and brown, a bottle of glue, scissors, popsicle sticks. I drew a tree trunk and the tree’s leafy top. He cut. He glued. He meticulously piled up 57 popsicle sticks. Though this proj ..read more

I learned a new word recently: “sprachgefuhl.” It was dictionary.com’s Word of the Day, and here is the important information you need so you can know this word too. It is German, an adopted word. You pronounce it SPROCK-guh-feel, with a rolled “r.” And what I read in the Quotes and Origin sections sticks with me more than the official definition–“…an infectious love of language that inspires his readers and illuminates the nooks and crannies of the English language” and “Sprachgefuhl combines German Sprache ‘speech, language’ and Gefuhl ‘feeling.’ Literally meaning ‘speech-feeling,’ this ..read more

I am choosing to enter the world of books as a self-published author and illustrator. I have several reasons for this, which include retention of the full ownership of and creative license over my work. I would like to know that I can always use my work in whatever way and format I can dream up. Traditional publishing looks different than it did 25 years ago. Today, much of the legwork of promotion and marketing would still fall to me. So why should I hand over rights and a large portion of revenue if I get to do the work of navigating this industry anyway? So, to provide a home for “The ..read more

Coloring appeals to almost every age. It can be intensely creative and also relaxing: two of my boys can spend whole afternoons drawing and coloring masterpiece after masterpiece; I have a 40-something friend who colors elaborate “stained glass” pages to relax after work; and I once read of a creative father who made a delightful hobby of coloring his daughter’s drawings, transforming them into Caldecott-worthy illustrations. That last example carries coloring right over into the realm of quality time with your kids–I am certain she will never forget this collaboration with her daddy. M ..read more
