Uber and Lyft: Safety of minors is not their concern

It’s crazy to think that the two companies that handle more than 99% of the U.S. Rideshare market are not concerned about rider safety, especially when it comes to unaccompanied minors using the service. Over the past few years, drivers have seen a huge increase in the amount of underage riders calling for an Uber or Lyft. In many ways it seems luck has been on these companies side when it comes to incidents involving riders under the age of 18. We’ve all heard the weekly news of riders and drivers alike being threatened, raped, or even killed. What we do not hear about is the amount of ri ..read more

Uber and Lyft drivers, protesting over pay and working conditions, brought traffic on the FDR Drive to a nearly dead stop at rush hour Tuesday morning. Video from Chopper 4 showed a caravan of black cars slowly rolling up the northbound FDR just after 8 a.m., with a massive line of stalled traffic behind them. By 8:45 a.m., traffic was still crawling. Some cars attempted — at time unsuccessfully — to squeeze past the caravan, which appeared to be dozens strong. The Independent Drivers Guild, which represents drivers with the two rideshare companies, said it was protesting app changes that it c ..read more

It wouldn’t be very Canadian to brag about one’s advantages. But on the world stage of well-planned cities, Vancouver has a lot to envy. Stitched around its ribbony shoreline, glassy high-rises, and ample urban forest is a public transit system that was recently voted North America’s best. Skytrain, the world’s longest fully automated rail network, hauls more than 495,000 passengers per day. Downtown buses arrive speedily—one bus route along Broadway comes every three minutes and moves 60,000 riders per day, the most in U.S. or Canada. Add in passenger ferries and a booming bikeshare program ..read more

Groundbreaking new California legislation impeding many companies from claiming workers are independent contractors takes effect in 2020. AB5 passed the Senate and Assembly last week, and Gov. Gavin Newsom has indicated he will sign it. Here are answers to questions about the gig work bill. Q: At the stroke of midnight on Dec. 31, will every Uber and Lyft driver in the state, plus all the other affected workers, turn into employees, like Cinderella’s coachmen transforming back into mice? A: Nope. As much as some might want a gig economy magic wand, it’s a lot more complex than that. Q: So what ..read more

Sometime in 2020, you might call for an Uber or Lyft ride, and experience sticker shock unlike anything you’ve seen under the so-called “surge” pricing that occurs when the ride-share services get extremely busy in one particular area. Or, worse, there may not be an Uber or a Lyft driver available at all. But that’s going to be just the tip of the iceberg in California under Assembly Bill 5, which passed through the Legislature this past week and, as of this writing on Thursday, appeared all but certain to be signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. The purpose of AB 5 is to change the state’s la ..read more

A Lyft driver was held at gunpoint while picking up a rideshare passenger Thursday night. The driver who wished to remain anonymous picked up a fare on 13th Street in north Richmond. According the Lyft driver, the passenger immediately pulled a gun on him. “As soon as he stepped into the car he pulled the gun on me and he hijacked me,” the driver said. The passenger diverted him from his original Sausalito destination and told him to head south. The passenger told the driver to pull off to Richmond Parkway to a store so he could get cigarettes. That’s when the driver began thinking how he coul ..read more

California legislators approved a landmark bill on Tuesday that requires companies like Uber and Lyft to treat contract workers as employees, a move that could reshape the gig economy and that adds fuel to a yearslong debate over whether the nature of work has become too insecure. The bill passed in a 29 to 11 vote in the State Senate and will apply to app-based companies, despite their efforts to negotiate an exemption. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, endorsed the bill this month and is expected to sign it after it goes through the State Assembly, in what is expected to be a formality. U ..read more

California is on the verge of passing a bill that would reclassify all “gig economy” workers—those who drive for Uber or Lyft, for example—as employees rather than contractors. Ride-sharing companies have responded by offering to pay drivers a minimum hourly wage of $21, but labor activists say the hike isn’t enough. The measure, known as AB 5, passed the California State Assembly in May and is expected to pass the state Senate next week. It will then head to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has put his full support behind the bill. Such a move would require gig economy companies to provide a wide array ..read more

Author: Sophia Bollag After millions of dollars in lobbying and countless hours of protests and negotiations, California lawmakers must make a final decision this week about the most high-profile labor bill of 2019. Assembly Bill 5 would establish new rules that dramatically expand which workers are entitled to employment benefits and protections. Both employers and workers alike have battled for months over which industries will be exempted from the new rules. On Friday, lawmakers submitted what the author’s office describes as the final round of amendments. Dozens of professions, from real e ..read more

Richard Tran lives with his aunt a mile and a half away from his high school in the suburbs of Orange County, California. That means it’s about a 30-minute walk away, but as a teenager, he doesn’t have a half hour to waste lugging home a heavy backpack. Those 30 minutes could be used for homework or video games, a quick nap or a solid scroll through social media. It occurred to Tran one afternoon that, instead of walking, he could call an Uber home. The high school senior knew that Uber and Lyft have policies that prohibit minors from riding unaccompanied by an adult — underage riders being a ..read more
