Hundreds of gig workers have been carjacked in the U.S. over the last five years. Uber has produced at least 24,000 “safety incident reports” that involved physical assaults perpetrated against its drivers by passengers. A total of 28 workers were killed, and dozens more were severely or permanently injured.

A new study says more than 50 gig workers have been murdered in the U.S. over the past five years. Advocacy group Gig Workers Rising says the study fills the void of any company or government data on the dangers of gig work. The study draws data from a report on 124 carjackings of ride-hail drivers. The Markup independently verified the incidents listed in the report. Lyft disputes the report, saying the names of three of the drivers listed did not occur on the Lyft platform.

Minneapolis police have tracked nearly 50 carjackings of Uber and Lyft drivers since mid-August. Twelve such incidents happened in the third week of October alone. Minneapolis Police Department: "Ride-share operators need to take extra precautions to stay safe" Both Uber, Lyft said they’re working to improve safety on their apps. Police departments from Chicago, Cleveland and Washington have seen an uptick in carjacking. In the last two years, 339 carjings and attempted carjackments have increased by 339 percent over the past two years.
