Pylon Electronics mourns the loss of a colleague and friend, who was taken from us far too early. Michael Lapointe (Mike) was a dedicated hardworking calibration technician at our Dartmouth facility. Mike was a very kindhearted person who was always there, ready to lend a hand wherever it was needed. He was a proud father, who enjoyed sharing pictures of his daughter Olivia with everyone at the office, and it always brought a smile to his face and ours. We were very grateful to have Mike as part of our team and he will be sadly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family at this diffic ..read more

Demystifying Measurement Uncertainty

Why is Measurement Uncertainty Important? Quality and cost are directly impacted by measurement uncertainty. Many industries including research, manufacturing, finance, and healthcare rely on reports that contain quantitative data from measurement results. Product quality, experiment results, financial decisions, and medical diagnosis can all be directly impacted by errors introduced from the omission of measurement uncertainty. Without awareness or consideration of the impact measurement uncertainty has on quality, the greater the probability of increased operating costs and failure rates. Ho ..read more

Ever doubt the accuracy of your bathroom scale? If the scale hasn’t moved after a week of dieting and exercising, could it be wrong? When we work hard at trying to lose weight, we want results. When the scale doesn’t reflect our efforts, it’s only natural to think that it’s broken and it’s time for a new one. Of course, a number on a scale is not an indicator of beauty or self-worth but it is nice to have an easy way to measure our progress. Since most of us would like to shed a few pounds, the scale becomes our go-to for progress evaluation. A few of us at the office were doubting our scale’s ..read more

Understanding the calibration data….what do the numbers mean?

As we have discussed in previous blogs, the purpose of calibration is to take a “snapshot in time” on a Unit Under Test (UUT) to determine performance. We are comparing our measured values against the (Original Equipment Manufacturer’s) OEM’s specifications for a specific instrument. This is commonly referred to as compliance testing. Occasionally, specifications are provided to us by the customer and we compare to those requirements. But what does all of this mean? What do you do with this information? The idea behind this blog is to explain, in general terms, what a client may do with the da ..read more

As we drive into spring, thoughts of warm weather and road trips to the beach have us anticipating the date when we can roll the windows down and switch out our winter tires for summer ones. But did you know that each time you have routine tire maintenance or switch tires your lug nuts should be accurately torqued? Also, schedule a follow-up appointment after approximately 100kms of driving to have the torque of your lugs nuts rechecked? As tires and hardware settle into their new season, thermal stressors and changes in metal properties may have loosened the hold. It’s important to verify the ..read more

Importance of Calibration Series: History of Horsepower

Most of us take calibration and standardized measurements for granted, not even thinking about the chaos that would ensue without it. However, the impact of unstandardized measurements would make life extremely difficult. Imagine trying to follow plans to build a deck on your house without predefined measurements like feet, inches, metres, or centimetres. A skilled carpenter might be able to figure out ratios of vague construction plans, but for most of us, it would make building a deck almost impossible. Also, without any measurement standards, calibration would not be possible ..read more
