Does Going “No Contact” with a Parent Mean I’m Sinning?

A few months back, I watched a video where Pastor Mark Driscoll discussed how to respond to toxic family members. Since we all have to deal with toxic people at times (family or not), I was interested to hear the message. After watching the video and reading through the comments, numerous individuals shared how they made the difficult decision to set hard boundaries or go no contact with toxic parents or in-laws. However, some commenters disagreed with this idea. They claimed that having no contact with a parent was sinning and dishonoring the parent. These commenters referenced, Exodus 2:12 ..read more

Can a Simple Life Be a Fulfilling Life?

You can easily find videos online of those who have chosen a simpler, slower life. Some of these individuals show how they wake up early, exercise in the morning, work a 9-5 job, and then come home to make dinner and spend time with their pets. There’s nothing glamorous about that- it’s simple and yet a beautiful routine. Other videos online show how a homeschool family has chosen to live off one income so that the mom can stay home with the kids. The family has simplified their life and made several sacrifices and cutbacks to make that happen, but they are happy and content with their simpler ..read more

Cultivating Peace: Quiet & Simple Rhythms During Busy Seasons Part 2: The Great Outdoors Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity. John Muir Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and rink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Ecclesiastes 5:18 I’m far from being a winter person. As those colder months quickly approach, it’s hard to look forward to snow, ice ..read more

Cultivating Peace: Quiet & Simple Rhythms During Busy Seasons Part 1: Books Books are the mirrors of the soul. Virgina Woolf Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if you whole world seems upset. Saint Francis de Sales As I look ahead to the many holidays and events approaching, there’s an entanglement of excitement and dread within me. Maybe you can relate if you’re a fellow introvert. Practicing Empathy is Hard

I like to think I’m an empathetic person, and for the most part, I believe that description accurately defines my character. But plenty of times I’ve fallen short of being empathetic, especially with those closest to me. Recently, my husband spent most of two days with our kids on full dad-duty. I was busy working, running errands, and taking care of appointments, while he gladly spent those two days keeping our kids busy, active, and fed. He also made time to help around the house and assist with some fall clean-up at his parents’ home. While I was extremely grateful for his dedicated support ..read more

It’s been a while! I haven’t been able to write for the past few months, but it’s only because of positive life events. Late this past summer, I began training for an online tutoring company, called Ignite! Reading. Ignite! Reading partners with school districts across the U.S. and uses a one-on-one approach to tutor students in early literacy skills. Many of the school districts that Ignite! Reading partners with are behind in their reading skills, so this program allows for children to be taught on an individual level in a safe, online classroom for a short 15-minute session each school day ..read more

Is That Good Advice?

All too often, well-intentioned family or church members may give advice that calls us to play it safe. But God’s call on our lives is often one of boldness and courage. This is why it’s important to look at the motivation of the person giving advice. Is their advice to protect us? While protection is important so that we’re not reckless with our lives, there’s another type of advice that’s given out of fear. It prevents us from actually living our lives by following Christ. When we focus on worldly circumstances, as Peter did, we will only make decisions by what we see. By this, we replace o ..read more

Real Friends Take Responsibility for Their Actions

Christians are often told to love and forgive. But what does that look like when someone continually takes advantage of your empathy and forgiveness? How can a relationship continue with someone who puts on a show of changed behavior for a time and then goes back to taking advantage of you? Is that really a healthy and loving cycle in a relationship? You should never keep someone close to you who has the habit of not taking responsibility for his/her actions or behavior. You should be able to have conversations with those close to you about how you’ve been hurt by their actions without that o ..read more

Elevation or Compassion?

“Healing from narcissistic abuse doesn’t start with elevating yourself above everything and everyone.” I quickly jotted down this statement back in April as I listened to Dr. Alison Cook’s podcast, “The Best of You.” Contemplating the quote, I looked it over, closed my notebook, and soon forgot about it until recently. As I looked over this statement again, I thought, Well this is obvious, right? When we elevate ourselves above others, we are being prideful- thinking we “know it all” or “have it all together.” In pride, we forget about God’s grace and mercy in our own lives. While the statemen ..read more
