WHAT: The Tickell Arms WHERE: Whittlesford WHEN: June ‘21   The powder blue exterior of The Tickell Arms sits perfectly in the quaint setting of Whittlesford. The inside didn't disappoint either, with a sophisticated yet modern feel. The fireplaces and shelves were  peppered with oddities, such as a dodo skeleton and a selection of hats adorned the walls. Exterior blue wall of The Tickell Arms   We were sat in the conservatory, and the outside-in vibe was bright, airy and really quite relaxing. All the glass doors were pulled away on my right hand side, to look out onto the gar ..read more

WHAT: Visit to Amelie Flammekeuche WHERE: The Grafton Centre WHEN: August ‘19 Sipping tentatively at my hot mug of tea in the staff room and meandering around the circular tables,  procrastinating about getting back to my desk, I noticed The Book People had left the months selection of books on offer. I relish looking through them and often find it hard not to buy one. This month was no different and I ended up purchasing three; the Joe Wicks Veggie Lean in 15 cookbook, Pinch of Nom cookbook and A Beginners Guide to Business. Archie has shown some interest in business and how it works and ..read more

WHAT: ELSIE MAY’S ELECTRIC LOUNGE WHERE: ST NEOTS TOWN CENTRE WHEN: OCTOBER ‘20 I'm a big fan of a parlour palm, or a Kentish palm...whichever way you want to call it and I love it when I walk up to a food review and I see them dotted about the place. If you hadn't guessed by now, Elsie May's Electric Lounge has them greeting you, which made me smile. It has a lovely light airy vibe, and I love the nod to the buildings history in the form of the large photo of the original tenants of the building, the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Electricity Company Showroom. It's a family ..read more

(5 minute read) WHAT: Chi WHERE: The Grafton Food Social WHEN: August ‘20   It’s a Thursday evening as I strolled in to the Grafton Food Social. It's a great development and such an upgrade from what resided previously so I am always glad to visit. This time, it was to visit Chi! Yippee! Let's begin with Bubble Tea. I've never had a bubble tea before so I was keen to try one of Chi's offerings. Turns out bubble tea is basically iced tea with bubbles in it. Who’d have thought? Not me, that’s for sure! I thought it would be some weird carbonated thing which I’ve just never been in the mood ..read more

(5 minute read) WHAT: THE SALISBURY ARMS WHERE: CAMBRIDGE WHEN: JULY ‘20   Our first post-lockdown review. The tips of our fingers are just brushing the normality we used to know as we reach out to try and grasp hold of it. Visiting restaurants now differs somewhat, with limited seating, hand sani stations and take out options galore! Let’s see what The Salisbury Arms has to offer… On entering we (Perry, Archie and myself) were  greeted by the ever so lovely Duncan who kindly asked us to sanitise our hands on entry. He showed us that the pub was set out with a clear one way entrance ..read more

(5 minute read) WHAT: THE THREE TUNS WHERE: GUILDEN MORDEN WHEN: MARCH ‘20 Just before lockdown, I visited The Three Tuns in Guilden Morden. This was exciting for four reasons: 1) It’s in the village next to where I grew up and where I have moved back to within the last couple of years 2) It is a community owned pub 3) I like food 4) I like pubs The story of how this pub came to be is quite a rad one to be honest. The pub was sitting there, unloved and unused (although I think I recall at one point an interior design company used it) but it got to the point where developers wanted to use the ..read more

WHAT: THE BURLEIGH ARMS RELAUNCH WHERE: NEWMARKET RD WHEN: FEBRUARY ‘20 As Long Road and Cambridge Regional College Alumni, I’ve seen and visited a fair few pubs around Cambridge. One I’ve never been in, is The Burleigh Arms on Newmarket Road. My Dad, who was my plus 1 for this specific trip, works on the other end of Newmarket Rd and had frequented the pub years and years ago. He reminisced on the pub grub of the day being exactly that, pub grub. Cheap, average quality but comforting.  First of all, it has parking for its customers - which was just bloody delightful. I live outside of C ..read more

WHAT: MILLWORKS WHERE: NEWNHAM ROAD WHEN: FEBRUARY ‘20 The sun was setting as I walked towards Millworks. It’s got to be one of the nicest venues in Cambridge. The setting, the brick work, the bloody mill!  All that metal against wood and brick is a timeless combination and the views are rather quaint.     Apparently Queen Elizabeth I  briefly frequented the building back in t'day, when she visited the scholastic, bombastic Cambridge in 1564. Being the Tudor nerd that I am, I smiled to myself as I read the fact on the back of the menu. All but one of the mains ..read more

WHAT: Meatless @ Ta Bouche WHERE: Market Passage WHEN: January ‘20 Ta Bouche has a special little place in my heart. It’s where I randomly saw Perry for the first time in ages on a night out. I asked him how him and his girlfriend were and he said they had broken up. I promptly felt awkward and apologised. I later found out that they had been broken up for a while but he hadn't told anyone but in that moment he felt compelled to tell me. Who can blame him, eh (LOL)? I've known him since secondary school, which means I’ve actually known him 20 years now but that random “hell ..read more
