Learning to run by yourself sucks! Your legs are going as fast as they can and yet it still feels like you’re running through molasses! Your face is as red as a tomato and your can’t catch your breath. You seriously question your life choices and WTF you’re doing this, and heck, why aren’t other runners not like you are. And during all this huffing and puffing your brain is the devil cheerleader telling you that “you suck”, “you look ridiculous”, “haahaahaa, you’re never going to get any better at this”, “just quit already”…..and so on. Which is why you need support. You need someone telling ..read more

In my new Zero to 5K Run Club (that starts on Monday btw), I’m gonna be guiding Club members from walking 2 minutes / running 15 seconds right up to achieving a 5K distance. Why? Because when I started out running I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. Like zero. And it was so hard. So I figured there are people out there – like the me of 2015 – who want to run but don’t know how to get started, or how to get past old trickster brain that says “you can’t be a runner”, or the process of going from only sprinting to catch the bus to running a 5K distance (while enjoying it and not swearing ..read more

Wobbling a wee bit (or a lot) when it comes to running? I totally get it. Here’s my top 6 tips to staying consistent with running. 1) Sign up for a race. But not just any old race, a race that inspires you, or the charity it supports means something to you, or it’s a route that is special. Get signed up and visualize every day you running that race with a massive smile on your face. 2) Stay present and run the km/mile you’re in. It can sometimes feel overwhelming or daunting when you’re faced with a long or fast run, so remember to stay present and only focus on the km/mile you’re running and ..read more

When I started running back in 2015, I had zero clue what I was doing. Like nada. I didn’t know about the run/walk method, or to get properly fitted for shoes, or that what I ate before my run would impact how the run went. I had zero running friends & had no clue about running blogs, or FB groups, or anything. It was a bloomin’ tough slog. I would lace up post-work 3 times a week (I’d still be wearing my work pantyhose under my sweats to stay warm – coz it was winter in Toronto & I had no idea about what runners wore to keep warm), and every single time I stepped out my front door to ..read more

THIS IS LIKELY WHY YOU HAVEN’T ACHIEVED A 2 HOUR HALF-MARATHON

Wanna know what is absolutely key to running a 2hr half-marathon? I chat to runners all the time that dream of hitting their coveted running time. But you know what the one major mistake is that I hear again and again? They focus on runs, on paces, on gear…..and completely by-pass having a clear strategy for how to prep their body before the run, during the run, and aid with recovery post-run. Can you guess what it is? FUELING, aka sports nutrition, aka food. Yup, this is your secret weapon to seeing 2:00:00 on your Garmin! If you are completely overwhelmed with knowing what to eat (and when ..read more

Have you watched AIR (the Nike & Michael Jordan movie)? If you haven’t already I highly recommend you do coz wow, wow, wow! The story has nothing whatsoever to do with running, but it was an incredible example of believing in yourself and what you are working towards. If you don’t believe in yourself and your goal, then I’m sorry to say it’s likely gonna be a bit of a bumpy ride.  What is it that you don’t believe in? Is it that: you haven’t achieved th ..read more

Whether you’d planned to take time off running or not, it can be hard / difficult / tricky to get back into it.    Here are my 5 strategies for coming back to running after taking time off. First and foremost, be kind to yourself. Getting angry or upset at yourself or the situation won’t help. Try to keep your mind positive and remember that this is a temporary situation. See this as an opportunity to get back to the basics and into good habits. Perhaps you previously didn’t do a warm-up, or you’d skip the cool-down in favour of a post-run coffee with friends. Identify what you ..read more

DECIDING WHEN YOU NEED A RUNNING COACH

Growing up, I was the kid that always avoided movement. As a teen, I would regularly bail on PE classes because I didn’t want my hair and make-up to get messed up with sweat! During my twenties, my inactivity continued, choosing to do a weekend marathon DVD boxset rather than getting outside and moving my body. Combined with my inactivity, I was also eating garbage but was in complete denial about how bad it was. It wasn’t until I moved to Canada in 2014 that my love for movement started – but gosh it was messy! I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I got injured all the time. I was exhau ..read more
