Child Seat Safety

This blog was written on Wednesday 10th February and is dedicated to the driver who sustained fatal injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues. I have been sat in on the M6 for 6 hours up to now. Less than a tenth of a mile in front of me are 3 heavy goods vehicles, with their loads spilt over the carriageway. Emergency services undertaking a simulated recovery Whilst my initial thought could be to be angry with the waste of my time, fuming because it’s completely affected my plans for today, frustrated that others have been inconvenienced because I am not ..read more

ONE IN THREE CHILDREN ARE FITTED INCORRECTLY IN THEIR CAR SEAT
Child Seat Safety

That’s 1:3 children at risk right now on our roads. We have said so many times that there’s no point in having a perfectly fitted child seat and a poorly fitted child! Sadly though, parents and carers seem to still be getting it wrong. We have been collating information from all our car seat checks for a long time now and when we looked into the details of mistakes people make, we were shocked! We asked the questions, what is more likely to occur: The seat would be wrong and the child will be fitted correctly? The child would be right but the seat will be wrong? Or…. The child and the seat wil ..read more

There are loads of people who often say they would love our job, its usually when we talk about the days when we work with the Police and stop cars with children and/or child seats in and check them over. It is a great opportunity to talk to drivers and parents about their children’s safety and on the whole, everyone is grateful for the advice, although you’ll always have someone who’s decided I have nothing better to do with my time than victimise them. But after 25+ years in the “in car safety” business, you really can surprise us for some of the things we see.  It’s sad that we still see ch ..read more

Warning – there is a lot of references to wine in this blog, it is no reflection on the author’s state of mind as a mother of two daughters on half term holidays. But more about us all speaking the same language. Wine was invented because raising children isn’t easy…. Why would you move your child into the next stage child seat when the one they have is perfectly fine? Car seats are classified into either weights or height groups. So for example: ….That makes no sense to me at all !! So this means to many parents,  that once there child is 9 kg, they can look at a Group 1 seat, however, th ..read more

“I need a car seat as an extra one for the grandparents.  I don’t want to pay a fortune as it’ll only be used occasionally. I know, I’ll have a look on eBay! Wow there’s 3,983 for sale – loads of choice! This one looks a good one – £10, collection only, and it’s just around the corner so I know it’s a good area. And a childminder is selling it! Perfect! They wouldn’t sell anything dodgy, because they really care about children to do that job… Looks in great condition! The scenario you’ve just read occurs nearly every day. Someone buys a second-hand car seat from an online site or a car boot sa ..read more

If you’re like us and hate this time of year when adverts appear on the TV for that perfect dream holiday, where you sit by a pool with a good book, not a frizzed hair in sight and looking stunning, whilst your little ones jump safely and without concern into that beautifully peacefully pool. Then this blog is for you! If your anything like us, before you’ve even got to the passport out of the drawer, you’ll be starting to panic about travelling with the children, especially hiring a car that fits all the luggage. And it’ll come as no surprise that we all start to question if we need a car sea ..read more

Have you ever wondered how many children’s lives are saved in car crashes by the use of a correctly fitted car seat in the UK? In our line of work, we’d love to know the answer too – but would it surprise you to know that it isn’t actually recorded? Following a road traffic collision and depending on its severity,  a record of what they find will be taken by the Police – this is often referred to as a Stats 19 form. This form varies slightly from Police Force to Police Force, but it  will include information like: It may then ask the age of the casualties or even better the date of birth, it ..read more

One of the most common comments we get at Police enforcement events goes something like this… “ You want to get down to my children’s school and have a look at the amount of children in wrong child seats, if they have any at all!” We also hear lots of parents say to their young passenger…. “ See, I told you the Police will stop our car and tell us off!!” That’s because we do help target the school run along with the Police will located near schools, not to be cruel (or to shout at any children!) but to help educate parents and their children about how life saving a correctly fitted car seat wi ..read more

CAR CRASH TV
Child Seat Safety

You may have heard the phrase “Car Crash TV” it basically means television programmes that show deliberately controversial, disturbing, or horrific material, that we don’t really want to see but we are compelled to keep watching.   It’s a bit of a sick phrase really when you think it through, in real life someone’s life has just dramatically changed, sometimes for ever, yet as by-standers we are drawn to observe it. However, I don’t want to dwell on that too much…. But rather the number of car crashes that occur in TV programmes. Did you know that up to the end of 2016 EastEnders had 10 story ..read more
