By Jeanne Starmack Inventor of the Cat-in-the-bag Cozy Comfort Carrier Gremlin was a typical cat with an independent streak matched by his determination to get his own way. A former stray, he had wandered into our yard. Our daughter was smitten – as for my husband and me, we had never owned a cat. We thought we were dog people. But our daughter begged, and suddenly we were thrust into cat ownership. We grew to love him, of course, but because we had never cared for a cat, we were in for some surprises. The first vet trip was no exception. I picked up Gremlin and tried to put him in a cardboard ..read more

Stud Tail on Cats

“Stud Tail” is a condition some #cats live with and describes a condition of excess oil, dander and dandruff at the base of a cats tail. Stud tail is a treatable condition and in moderate to severe cases treatment is advised as the condition can cause discomfort and pain for your pet. To determine if your cat has Stud Tail it helps to closely examine the base of his or her tail. A disproportionately oily patch on the skin or flaky dandruff is a sign. If you look closely, you will also see many blackheads in the skin. It is typically much easier to identify Stud Tail once a cat has been shaved ..read more

Harry’s Day at Groomzy

By Paul Cook Harry is a 4 year old domestic medium haired cat who came into our salon after recently being adopted by his owner Jax. Known to Jax for a long time as a stray in the area presumed to have a home but having a habit of popping in for a visit, Harry was eventually taken to the vet by Jax (after a feed or two) to check if he was microchipped or not. To Jax’s surprise, he wasn’t and from there he spent a fortnight at Lort Smith in North Melbourne to see if his original owners (if any) might claim him. After two weeks and no one coming up to claim Harry, Jax chose to add an extra cat ..read more

A Cat Groomer's Dilemma

By Paul Cook While dog grooming is commonplace, far fewer people realise that there are professional cat groomers out there too. To be fair, it’s a fairly small industry, but it’s large enough to have its own institutions and leaders(1) who over the past few decades have taught thousands of groomers around the world the best practices of this purrfect industry (sorry, I know, I had to). Were you to spend a few hours studying what it takes to be a cat groomer, you’d discover the cat grooming community have a really clear sense of what best practices among cat groomers look like. I was happy t ..read more

Lion Clip Vs. Comb Clip. Which is best?

Sometimes people ask me “Yo, what’s the difference between a lion clip and a comb clip?” and I’m like “Yo, I’ll tell you”. Actually though, most of the time people already know what the lion clip looks like, but they do not know what the comb clip is. A lion clip is a full-body short shave with the exception of the head and lower legs. You have the choice to leave the tail unshaved or as a pom-pom. A comb clip is a longer length shave over the whole body and is more suitable for winter. If you have a long hair cat and you do not her/him to freeze during Melbourne winter time, the best what yo ..read more

Cat Grooming ? ? ?

When people ask me what I do for a living and I say I groom cats, most of them start to laugh. “Groom cats?” they ask me back. "Why do cats need to be groomed? Don’t they just groom themselves? I’ve never heard of it before." And they continue. If you have a cat you’ll be used to finding your furry friend’s hair on your jeans, your couch, your chairs, your pillow case and your neatly folded laundry. Or perhaps you have a long-haired cat with knots and mats and you’re not able to keep on top of it, then you might make a decision to bring your cat to a professional cat groomer. Matted fur can c ..read more
