We are happy to have had an increase in visitors this year and over the last few weeks a number of international tourists have enjoyed their African Relish experience with a meal at The Chef’s Café, a Foodie Tour and cooking class or stay in our cottages.  There have been a few hiccups on the way, our website failing us a few times will need a major overhaul in 2023; the town has had some municipal water issues that have impacted on many in our surrounds; load shedding (thank goodness for our gas cookers and wood fired pizza o ..read more

Summer. Wishes to you for a happy, healthy and abundant 2022 from the African Relish team. What better way to start the new year than with a week of cooking classes and being able to use the harvest from our freshly minted Bard garden. The garden is bountiful and rewarding. The Chef’s Café is able to include salad greens picked a stone’s throw away from the kitchen as we coped with the summer rush over Christmas and New Year. During the last weekend course of 2021, The Edible Landscape with Loubie Rusch, we pickled, fermented vinegars’, cooked preserves and prepared sumptuous dishes from the A ..read more

The Bard Garden is our new potager in the cooking school grounds. The first phase of planting was completed on 27th October under a brooding indigo sky and the heavens opened within minutes of planting the last of the sunflower seeds. After the rain The process began by asking Brett Bard of Tortoiseback Vegan Haven to collaborate with us on the design and cultivation of the garden in order to grow flowers, herbs and vegetables for use in the cooking school and restaurant. It will be a learning vehicle for our chefs and gardening team, as well as an inspiration for the students to the school an ..read more

Breaking ground, the beginnings of a sustainable fork to fork project. We are preparing the land for The Bard Garden. What was once lawn will become a 10 x 15m organic potager garden. The garden is based on permaculture principles and agro-ecological growing techniques. Devised by Brett Bard, the design concept is taken from The Golden Ratio. The potager will be constructed along a spiral path focus with elongated beds and paths radiating outwards within the rectangle. Being vegan and an animal rights activist Brett celebrates the joys of plant-based living, and is well known for the abundance ..read more
