When most of us think of cannabis, we think of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. It’s the compound responsible for the psychoactive ‘high’ of cannabis and many of its medicinal benefits. But what if you don’t like the psychoactivity? What if you want the positives of THC, without the euphoria or intoxication?  Enter, THCa. This post may contain affiliate links. Learn more here. What is THCa? Unlike THC, THCa is non-intoxicating. Found in raw and live cannabis, THCa is an untapped but up-and-coming form of cannabis medicine. In fact, THCa is THC, before it becomes THC. As the cannabis ..read more

It’s a bit mind blowing to me that we are about to round out the FOURTH year of Florida’s medical cannabis program. Looking back it’s been a whirlwind of a time, coming very far from the three dispensaries and three products it seemed like we started with.  For patients new to the program, and those who have been in it from the start, the intricacies, logistics, and volume of information can become tiring and overwhelming. This post rounds up the most important need to know items, resources, and links to help cut down on the headache and get you feeling better quicker. Medical Marijuana U ..read more

Dry Herb Vaping: Getting the Most Out of Your Medical Cannabis

Most people first use cannabis by smoking it. While this has it’s benefits - it’s quick and easy to titrate, smoking has the obvious drawbacks. For many it’s irritating, harsh, and just best avoided. Vaporizing, or vaping, cannabis is a cleaner alternative to smoking the plant and allows you to really stretch your dollar. Over 75% of the plant is destroyed when smoking. No destruction happens with vaping and you can even reuse the left over already vaped bud. It’s the ultimate medicating method! What is Vaporizing? Vaporizing a substance means heating it to the point that it converts to it’s v ..read more

Medical Cannabis Delivery Methods: Ways to Consume Cannabis
Kristina Risola
by Kristina Risola

One of my favorite things about medical cannabis is the variety of ways to consume the medication. As a patient, I love having  the ability to choose how I take my medication based upon my specific need. This gives me a sense of control and relief that I’ve never been able to achieve with other treatments. We call the different ways to consume medical cannabis delivery routes, or delivery methods. Choosing a Cannabis Delivery Method When choosing the right cannabis delivery method for you, it’s important to consider the nature of your symptoms, the time of day, your overall goals, an ..read more

How to Use Hemp CBD Flower as a Medical Cannabis Patient
Kristina Risola

It’s highly likely that you’ve seen or heard about CBD. It’s everywhere -your friends and loved ones are using it, doctors are recommending it, and it’s even on gas station counter tops (don’t buy those). It’s a bit of a therapeutic powerhouse, helping people struggling with a variety of symptoms such as pain, inflammation, and anxiety, but quality is extremely important. When I first got into medical cannabis I would have told you to avoid industrial hemp at all costs. Fortunately, with improvement in CBD laws over the last few years, the availability of quality CBD ‘hemp’ flower from over th ..read more

This post was originally published on March 17, 2018. It was last updated on 2/24/20. Cannabis patients learn quickly that costs add up. Taking some time to do things yourself can save you a ton of money. It also allows you to better control the quality of ingredients in your medicines - an important concern when it comes to cannabis vaping. Filling my own vape cartridges was one of my first DIY as a cannabis patient. When the Florida program first started, we didn’t have many options for medicine. Flower wasn’t legal, MMTCs had a handful of products, and the closest dispensary was over an ho ..read more

Breaking Down Cannabinoids: What is THCa?
Kristina Risola
by Kristina Risola

Even the most experienced users are surprised to hear that the cannabis plant doesn’t actually produce THC and CBD. I know….you probably just said to yourself, “What? What the hell is she talking about. Of course cannabis produces THC.” Instead, the cannabis plant creates cannabinoids in their raw state, called cannabinoid acids. While similar, these cannabinoid acids have different properties than the THC and CBD we know and love. THCa, is just that. The acidic form of THC. This post may contain affiliate links. As research and our understanding of cannabis advances, we see a wider variety of medical cannabis products available on dispensary shelves. From gels, capsules, inhalers, to powders that dissolve in water the options are seemingly endless. While these products help to improve access and break down barriers, they are also far different than the natural, whole plant, many of were first attracted to.  While I’m incredibly excited for the advances in cannabis medicine - I wish that a few factors were considered a bit further when putting these products in patients hands - primarily patient educat ..read more

Medical Cannabis Flower in Florida - 2020 UPDATE

We’re already just two months away from the year anniversary of smokable flower in Florida. I can’t believe how quick the time has gone by. When it became clear that the smokable legislation was going to pass, I worked around the clock to make sure our patients at Florida Medical Cannabis Clinic would be taken care of right away. I reviewed the coming law, updated our systems, and had everything in place so we would be ready as soon as the Governor’s signature dried and the first MMTC was dispensing. I was lucky to be one of the first patients to purchase loose flower in Florida. It seemed lik ..read more
