Imposter Syndrome and Art

I recently did a test online @ http://www.psychtests.com Turns out I am 83% suffering from Imposter Syndrome. Here’s what the test results told me… “No matter what you manage to accomplish, you are unable to enjoy your success. You see yourself as an imposter and fear that eventually – especially if you make a mistake or fail – people will discover that you are actually incompetent. This could be related to a lack of confidence, a tendency to believe that success is due to factors that you cannot control (like luck), or a fear that you will be unable to sustain it and thus, lose people’s respe ..read more

Today I’m gonna paint but first I have to….. Walk the dog. Make Tea. Eat Breakfast. Do some laundry. Make my bed. Take a shower. Clean the bathrooms. Run to the store. Go for a swim. Meet a friend for lunch. Start dinner. Clean the kitchen. Phone my Daughter and my Mom. Online shop. Watch the latest episode of my show. Paint my toenails. Make another Tea….. “Free Bird” 48×36 inches Acrylic on Gallery Wrapped CanvasOn and on the procrastination techniques abound. It is so easy NOT to get to the easel that it’s a wonder I have ever completed a painting at all. The same holds true for Blo ..read more

Seasons In My Life and Art

Season is a most interesting word. When you break down the English language it can be fun to just say the word out loud and slow it right down. Sea-zon, Seize on, Seas-un….a silly game but a word full on meaning. For me it means the changing of the weather, the movement of a time of life from one stage to the other and also to let something marinate and ferment, food or ideas or even to clean a cast iron pan properly! Right now I’m contemplating my time of life and my new role as a Grandmother. Sometimes I have a moment of clarity and I think about my deathbed and who will surround me. I re ..read more

Painting Who and What I See…On to The Canvas

It’s been really fun to paint more and more as I develop a routine of getting to the easel whenever it’s possible. I get distracted by the normal tasks of life. Grocery shopping, laundry, walking the dog. It all takes me away from the act of making art….I know…I’ve got a pretty cushy life. What would life be without those little everyday necessities? There would be no milk for my tea when I needed it and no clean underwear in my dresser drawer. Sometimes I do fear the white canvas and get stuck but not very often. I think it’s the way I approach most canvases that helps me out in this regar ..read more

Art Workshops. To Go Or Not To Go.

Art Workshops – Are They Worth It? Hi all! I’ve just come back from an Art Workshop and I want to talk a little bit about it. It was my 3rd visit to Donna Downey’s Studio in North Carolina. It was my first time at her new location. The new spot is incredible and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a great artistic experience paired with a stay at a beautiful bed and breakfast in an amazing wooded setting with all the amenities you could hope for AND gourmet catered food! With that said I want to discuss the crap shoot it is when choosing a workshop to attend and how you need to ..read more

More is More!

Today’s painting is called “More Is More” It’s my tribute to Iris Apfel. In case you didn’t know, she is a 98 year old fashion Icon from New York City. I really didn’t know about her until I watched the Netflix documentary about her life a few years ago. She has stuck with me ever since as one of my most admired human beings. She’s in good company with Judge Judy,David Bowie and recently LIZZO!I know what I like and I love these people. Iris Apfels sense of style and her attitude that More is better leads to joyful thoughts of hunting for my own collection of cool stuff like hers. I could neve ..read more

Should Art Evoke Emotion?

As I sit down to write this post I’m 2 feet away from the last large piece I just painted. 48”x36” staring me right in the face. I’m looking at it and I’m thinking “This character makes me feel this and that character makes me feel that and the whole thing makes me wonder what the heck is going on.” A really interesting thing when I paint is that I don’t know who’s going to show up in the piece! I have no idea when I begin a piece what the eyes of the characters are going to stay to me. They seem to be a reflection of things that are going on in my own mind and that’s really cool because ..read more

I’ll Never Be That Artist Again

I’m not the same person I was last night….or the day before… or the day before that. I won’t be the same person tomorrow. Things are moving quickly. I can see it every time I paint. I’ve completed two larger paintings since coming back to the Cayman Islands after a summer in Canada. A couple of fast and furious days of work flew by while I spilled my guts out in colour on the canvas. I was in the flow and didn’t even know what I had until I saw the finished pieces. It feels so good to shift. Each day I wake up and realize that I’m not the same person or the same artist that I was the prev ..read more

Who Am I Painting For?!?
Work Of Art | A meandering account of my adventures in Art.

I finished a painting last week and I was tickled with how it made me smile. I did acknowledge within myself that the concept could have been pushed much further. I am headed home to the Cayman Islands in a week after what seems like and eternal summer and I am looking forward to having a bit more space to move around in. I plan on moving the concept further and on a much larger scale. I can see that trying to paint in a little summer trailer has many disadvantages but I have had to work with the space I’ve got. There is no other option right now until I can manifest something bigger and bette ..read more

I’m reaching a point in my Art journey where I feel I’ve only just taken a baby step in the process of finding my true artistic voice. Making art is such an all enveloping process for me. If I’m gonna do it I have to throw myself into it and everything else slides. The dog is lucky to get walked or fed. The same goes for my husband. I do however manage to keep the kettle going to have a constant stream of tea on the brew. Hours and hours pass by. I focus inward, I look at the big picture. I choose my colours instinctively….by the seat of my pants. It’s so much like being a kid again! I get to ..read more
