Last week my family sat down to watch NBC Boston’s new documentary: “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of New Hampshire,” a look at the rapidly growing Free State Project (FSP) in the Granite State. If you aren’t already familiar, the FSP is a nonprofit with the goal of moving 20,000 libertarians to New Hampshire to increase personal freedoms and secure limited government. Members come from all walks of life, backgrounds, and means, and share a common goal articulated by founder Jason Sorens: libe ..read more

You may have noticed that there are some new changes to connerdrigotas.com
You also may have noticed this is my first time reaching out to you in over a year.
At a time when I could have been talking about the importance of human liberty and the need to respect human rights and dignity during a global pandemic, I was largely silent unless I was representing a client or employer. There were a few exceptions: the Tay’s World podcast for example, a few tweets maybe.
That’s because things have changed a lot in the past two years. And as a result, I made a choice to value some other things in my li ..read more

In the last hours before a final vote on the second COVID stimulus bill, two members of Congress had the same principled reaction to a very important point. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Representative Justin Amash both tweeted their disgust that mere hours before a pivotal vote on the omnibus COVID stimulus bill, the text had not yet been delivered to legislators for them to read. When it did arrive, just over an hour before the vote, it was over 5,500 pages long.
That these two Representatives are on the same ..read more

“Merit itself is, in large part, the result of luck” and, “Meritocracy is not only wrong; it’s bad” argues Mark Clifton in his recent article for Aeon. That’s a tough pill to swallow for Americans, for whom merit is not just part of our cultural identity, but our economic structure. Indeed, merit is a key part of our complicated fiscal system and a necessary ingredient of all free markets. If we want to be neither “wrong” nor “bad,” should we toss both merit and the free market out the window?
If the goal is helping more people out of poverty (Mark and I agree, it is). And luck/ random events ..read more

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has a storied history of standing up for fundamental rights enshrined in the United States Constitution. In some cases, that has meant taking principled stands, despite negative popular opinion of their case or client. Times have changed, however, and the ACLU has shifted their priorities. In the last few years, the ACLU is better known for seeking cheap headlines over principled legal work. That’s a bad sign for our constitutional rights, which are already on shaky ground. To protect our fou ..read more

With the holiday season underway, executive orders that put government interests and revenues above the basic principle of equality under the law are putting a damper on the holiday spirit. The most recent intrusion in my own backyard is an executive order from Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf arbitrarily banning the sale of alcohol in bars and restaurants from 5 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thanksgiving Day. Wolf says these measures are intended to mitigate an increased risk of exposure to Covid-19. I guess it’s simply coincidental, then, that it helps his bottom line by helping state-run liq ..read more

It was a bit of a shock when the FBI announced they had successfully thwarted an attempt to violently overthrow the established government of Michigan and kidnap Governor Gretchen Whitmer. This is the first major headline of this kind in recent memory, and it was quickly followed by news of a kidnap plot of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. It seemed wild, even for these times.
Yet, to be honest, we shouldn’t have been too surprised. In our awful, tragic culture war, we’ve been careening toward these sorts of outrageous tactics for quite some time ..read more

There are a lot of people in the world who care about liberty, and only a small number of them are getting paid to pursue that passion. I want to change that. If you want to see the world become more free, if you want to be part of the positive change this world needs: I wrote this book for you.
