Are you a multitasking or task-switching superyacht leader?

Former Captain-turned-executive coach, Brendan P O’Brien, discusses one of the main challenges of being a superyacht leader – multitasking. There are days as a Captain where structure and planning prevail. Then there are those days when, as a superyacht leader, I would feel stretched thin; trying my best to delegate and multitask my way through the work. We can all recognise these days – those that start off so well and then a simple a knock at the door or a telephone call, a message or email, requires our immediate attention. Some days I would have space for this and on another, I might not ..read more

Quay Crew
by Tom Rose

I have spent the past six years working in crew recruitment and have made hundreds of placements in this time, but it still strikes me how very few people know how to effectively communicate with yacht crew agencies. This is true not just with yacht crew candidates, but also clients, and this blog highlights what we need from you in order to maximise success in both your job and candidate search. Yacht crew candidates Pre-placement Effective communication with yacht crew agencies is first and foremost about honesty. Crew mental health – The state of the superyacht sector 2024
Quay Crew
by Charlotte Flake

The superyacht sector is moving in the right direction when it comes to crew mental health, albeit at a snail’s pace according our latest survey. Following the 2021 survey among 1,000+ crew, we repeated the research in an attempt to monitor whether any headway is being made. The new survey, which collected almost 900 responses at the latter end of 2023, reveals that more yachts are putting policies, practices and services in place to support crew who may suffer from poor mental health. However, these top-level efforts are yet to have a significant impact on overall crew wellbeing, with very s ..read more

Yacht crew moving shoreside – crunching the numbers

If you’re currently enjoying life as yacht crew but have been pondering the idea, and even opportunities, to move to a similar role on land, there’s a lot to think about. And as someone who has made this transition myself (into a private household role), one of the biggest considerations is how it will impact you financially. Usually, life onboard comes with an attractive and often tax-free salary, little time to spend it and food and accommodation provided while you are working. Although not always seen as perks, you’ll soon come to realise you may have taken these things for granted once you ..read more

Exposure to tender driving: what all Deckhands dreams of?
Quay Crew
by Tommy Hutchins

As a crew recruitment agent, I’m naturally in contact with a large number of Deckhands on a weekly basis, and there’s a been a pattern emerging when it comes to why they want to move on. Of course, there are often a multitude of different reasons for Deckhands wanting to explore new opportunities, but it’s becoming increasingly the case that boredom and lack of exposure to more deck activities is a key motivation. We all know that the more mundane and laborious tasks are inevitably a big part of the job, but are senior Deckhands and Chief Officers missing the boat (pardon the pun) in terms of ..read more

Superyacht jobs market update – Q4 2023
Quay Crew
by Charlotte Flake

The final quarter of 2023 turned out to be a busy one for the superyacht jobs market, with a 39% increase in the number of placements made. It was the larger yachts that dominated the job market again, with one in three of our placements being made onboard 90m+ superyachts, and a quarter of roles were senior. These factors may have contributed to the slight average salary increase of 4%, taking the monthly average across all departments to €5,336. Following on from the previous quarter, there was a similar number of temporary placements made and the percentage split of jobs across all departm ..read more

Compassion at Christmas: The yachting edition

Here we are in December again and Christmas is just a week away. Some of you will be Caribbean-bound if not already there and others will be facing down a northern European winter. For the rest, I hope this is the rotation to be at home with your friends and family, and if it is, enjoy as many mince pies and late mornings with no alarms as you can! For the majority of the crew either on 5:1 or with no rotation yet, and the Captains and crew whose year it is to stay onboard for Christmas, it may be a tricky time of year – full of surprises and fluctuations of sanity. There’ll no doubt be primar ..read more
