Following months of preparation, the team and their hyperloop pod protoype ‘The Flying Podsman’ journeyed over 5,000 miles to SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne to compete alongside 20 of the best hyperloop teams in the world. The Hyperloop society at the University of Edinburgh, HypED, was recently selected to build a prototype for the global finals of SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition, which will take place in late August at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California. The HypED team went through multiple rounds, submitting preliminary design briefing in Autumn 2016 (30 page document), final design briefing at the end of February 2017 (120+ page document) and presenting the design to SpaceX engineers this March. Hyped are proud to announce they have been awarded funds from Innovation Initiative Grant, as well as a cash award, providing a modest, but comfortable budget to continue their research, development and testing. Last month the HYPED - a group of 30 students from both School of Engineering and Edinburgh College of Art - went to College Station, Texas, to compete in the Hyperloop Pod Competition organised by SpaceX and came back with the Subsystem Technical Excellence Award.
