I have met some pretty incredible people in my career both as an Emergency physician and as a professional coach. I’ve noticed patterns of behavior that deserve consideration. Some of the very strengths of character that ‘got us where we are today’ also are holding us back from achieving work-life integration. The good news is they can be overcome! Achievement Physicians are achievers. They get into medical school because they achieve good grades in high school and college. Once they decide they want to become doctors, their grit gets them through the hurdles to meet the expectations of the me ..read more

Creativity wins the day. If I did not have my creative outlets I could not be the resilient gal I am. I need to be able to find innovative ways to live my life. Detach myself. Many times I will take my dog Sienna out for a long walk to just brush away the challenges of the day. Animals help us to be better versions of ourselves. Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Times are not easy now. How do we develop greater resilience to withstand the challenges that keep being thrown at us? In this interview series, we are tal ..read more

Focus on your goal and remember it is your goal, no anyone else’s. So, when others discourage you, remind yourself it is not their goal. A great example I have on this was, in high school I wanted to take two years of Latin and two years of French. My first year of Latin was tough and my grades were not great, but they improved as I got extra help. My guidance counselor told me I should not take Latin II but switch to Spanish or French for the next three years. My mother was so bothered by the fact she discouraged me and was telling me to take an easier path that she had me assigned to a diff ..read more

Resilience is my middle name, LOL. I have been beating the odds all my life. I suffered a lot of homelessness at an early age and that was one of the major contributions to building my resiliency. It fueled a fire inside of me that would never allow me to be homeless again. Homelessness also gave me an unmatched drive and determination. Fear of being poor and homeless made me go twice as hard as everyone else. Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Work on self worth: If you don’t build yourself up and respect yourself, you will keep going in circles. The only way to break this cycle is to know who you are. Own yourself, own your experiences, own your pain. You are incredible and a force to be reckoned with. Don’t let anyone take that away from you. Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Times are not easy now. Courage is often a concept born of privilege. Many of the people that we work with, that would be considered courageous, are acting out of necessity driven by the situations in their own lives and communities. Resilience is a skill set born of survival, then. It isn’t a training they attended or a theory they studied, it’s a lived practice. Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Times are not easy now. How do we develop greater resilience to withstand the challenges that keep being thrown at us? In this interview series ..read more

Build a List — We tend to have short memories when times get hard. I coach people on the idea of building lists of things you have overcome in your life as well as things that you have accomplished (even when you thought you couldn’t). It’s a very useful thing to be able to tap into a collection of these items when things get more difficult. These lists serve to remind us of all of the things we have accomplished and overcome in our lives thus showing proof of our resilience. We can use these lists to either build confidence in our ability to overcome obstacles or remind us how we overcame ce ..read more

Ground yourself daily. Step away from your normal routine, get out into nature. I will take a short walk, to change the way I feel. When you can become one with nature it will change your focus, create clarity, and change how you look at things. A lot of times my mind gets clutter with all the writing I do, and I get blocked, Stuck. So, I will stop everything I am doing, and take a walk, instantly things come into focus. My body and mind begin to feel better, and it fuels my soul. Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life eve ..read more

…Remember that not every moment is supposed to be easy. Life is full of moments that are unpleasant: toothaches, pop quizzes, difficult conversations, births, deaths, the list is long! Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Times are not easy now. Write down the strengths that others see in you. You know how people compliment on certain qualities that you often ignored or do not think you have. People often tell me that I am a hard worker. Sometimes I do not believe I am putting out my best work or working hard. Imposter syndrome can show up on me sometimes. Resilience has been described as the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficult life events. Times are not easy now.
