nVidia has recently released three refreshed cards, the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, and the RTX 4080 Super. That is a lot of Supers! Let us take a look at each, in brief.   RTX 4070 Super   + Pros: This is a proper refresh, with a 10-15% performance increase for the same price as the non-Super version. It remains a good card, with great power efficiency.   – Cons: $600 is still quite a lot of money to throw at a card. It gets worse with the other Supers though.   RTX 4070 Ti Super   + Pros: The performance increase over the non-Super is roughly 5-10%, at the sa ..read more

Perhaps, your characters walk without input, or the camera moves around slowly. Sure, you wiggle the analog sticks and it’s fine … but only for a moment. One of the sticks has begun to drift on its own. Enter the Hall Effect game controller. They promise to address the annoying issues th ..read more

(Information on Steam’s top games were gathered for this article from Steam Charts) Back in January 2020, I crafted a neat little piece discussing the Logical Increments tier needed to enjoy each of the top games on Steam at the time. Fast forward to now, and oh, how the scene has shifted! Back around that period, we were seeing trade tariffs causing a good bump in prices for PC hardware. As we ventured into late 2020, high demand meant the cost of PC parts kept climbing, and 2021 brought even higher prices—especially for graphics cards due to a cryptocurrency boom. Oh, and let’s not forget ..read more

The Raptor Lake (is Barely a) Refresh

I am always excited by hardware launches! The feeling of fresh, new, unexpected hardware! Progressing technology, things getting faster, or cooler, or cheaper, or all three at the same time. It is wonderful, and it is a feeling I look forward to with each launch… Intel just launched its Raptor Lake refresh CPUs, adding a (hopefully) fresh coat of paint and renewing its Raptor Lake lineup from last year. There are three new CPUs to be considered for positions in our main PC build chart: i5-14600K (14 cores, $320) i7-14700K (20 cores, $410) i9-14900K (24 cores, $600) The Good:   Let us b ..read more

The “A580 and Other Intel Graphics Cards” Update

One year ago (almost to the day) Intel presented its A770 and A750 cards to the world. These were reasonably priced cards with reasonable performance, but were not added to our build chart then because—in addition to other minor issues with them—they suffered from two major flaws:   The performance in old titles was poor. The performance on old systems (without Resizable BAR) was poor. It has been a year, and you still need a system that has Resizable BAR, but that is available on all modern platforms launched in the last ~3 years, so it is less of an issue. More importantly, Intel’s l ..read more

We all know that HDDs are essentially obsolete as a technology, as SSDs now do everything better. But HDDs have continued to be manufactured and recommended, as they have one very desirable advantage: A lower price. SSDs have been getting cheaper though, and have overtaken HDDs in some price segments…   How Far SSDs Have Come:   We have already stopped recommending 250GB and 500GB HDDs in our main build chart, as SSDs for those capacities are cheaper. 1TB HDDs and SSDs are (roughly) the same price, so we logically recommend SSDs. For 2TB capacities, the gap is closing. The differenc ..read more
