I have it all mapped out. What it’s going to look like, how it’s going to run. Where it’s going to be located and how many places I’m going to travel to. Who I’m going to speak to and the people I’m going to meet. What I’m going to build for my children and how they are going to respond to it. I visualize it all happening. I fantasize about the day it will all come together. But something is happening. Shit is not working out. It’s taking longer than… The post Surrendering appeared first on ..read more

I can remember when I first heard about the book, Are you there God? It’s Me, Margaret, by Judy Blume. It was a buzz about this book that followed a sixth-grade girl experiencing the many challenges of becoming an adolescent. There was one particular part in the book that everyone talked about… when she got her period. I was so excited that I was going to get to read firsthand about that experience. When I finally got my hands on the book, there was no need for me to flip… The post Are You There God? It’s Me Tamekia. appeared first on ..read more

HerStoryMag: Where were you born and raised? Theresa Alexis: I was born and raised in Birmingham, AL, where I certainly didn’t fit into my family’s “normal” or “average” box. Growing up wasn’t a walk in the park and it certainly isn’t what I would describe as “good” or “great”. I have four siblings but only grew up in the same house with three of them. My older brother stayed with my great aunt and uncle in MS for as long as I could remember.  HerStoryMag: Who was childhood hero? My Truth
HerStory

At any point of the day, I can look into a mirror at myself and honestly say, I am not living. I am only existing. For so long, I convinced myself that if I were in a relationship and made the other person happy, it would be reciprocated. One divorce and one hellacious five-year relationship later, that was not the case. Instead of expressing my innermost feelings (one I did not respect and the other I was just a fool for), I told myself that it would be okay because… The post My Truth appeared first on ThE HerStory MaG ..read more

Momma, I See You.

I was born to a teenage mother, who was born to a teenage mother, who was born to a teenage mother. Yep.. three generations of teen moms. My mother was 14 years old when she became pregnant with me and 15 when she gave birth. What’s ironic is my grandmother was also pregnant. Not only was she about to birth to her eighth child at 30, but she was also about to become a first-time grandmother. Can you imagine being 30 years old with eight children and your first grandchild… The post Momma, I See You. appeared first on ThE HerStory MaG ..read more

It’s Not The Failures That Define Us…It’s How We Respond

Failure is defined as nonperformance of something due, required, or expected. The truth is we all fail. So, this article is not about what to do if you fail. You’re setting yourself up for failure if you think it is something you can avoid. It’s simply not true. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” Failure does not have the respect of a person. It does not give a damn who you are, what you do, or who you know. Failure will creep in and steal your sen ..read more

I was a latch-key kid growing up and the one thing I remember my mom saying daily was, “Don’t open this door for nobody”. She was a single mother so not working was not an option. So just like many women who have to make hard sacrifices for their kids, she decided to let me stay home alone for a couple of hours after-school until she made it home from work. I had a routine. I would go into the house, put my backpack down, and get me something to eat. The best part is that I would go to her room and lay in her bed to watch television. I was living the life until about 6:30 because then I would ..read more

You’re All I Need To Get By

Listening to Mary and Method Man as I sit with my favorite glass of COVID 19 Black Box Cabernet (yep I’m drinking boxed wine). Thinking about all the new things I’m learning about myself while singing along with the words to this song, the same song that introduced Mr. and Mrs. Lesure to the world for the first time almost six years ago.  As I reminisce over the lyrics I begin to think, what are some of the things I need to get by? Knowing that after this pandemic the world will never be the same, I had to first get clear about the meaning of BY. I’m not trying to ball out or be super ne ..read more
