You might be missing this one thing which could cause you to not improve in climbing, confidence. If you lack confidence when you are climbing, it can drastically affect how you climb. You want to go into each attempt with a positive mindset; If you go into it expecting to fall or not excited to try the sequence, you won't climb to the best of your ability. Climbing with confidence isn't talked about enough and is critical to performing at your limit. For example, a few weeks ago I had just finished an eight-hour work shift starting at 4:30 in the morning and was getting off at 12:30 and heade ..read more

Sometimes we forget how much fun climbing is because we get caught up in grades, injuries, fear of judgment and so much more. To fight that below I'll share the keys to enjoying climbing again, more than ever before. TAKE A MINUTE TO REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU CLIMBED When you take a few minutes to remember the first time you were introduced to climbing and decided to give it a go. Remember how proud and excited you were when you first made it to the top of the wall? Now, look at where you are and how you are making it to the top of climbs that you couldn't have dreamt of doing when you first ..read more

HOW TO: Dyno like a Pro

The most popular question I have been asked has by far been about how to do dynos and asking what the proper technique is. So today I will help you improve your dynamic climbing skills. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet about the proper technique to dyno. Before I get into it I want to clarify what I mean by "dyno" when I use that word in the article I mean doing a move where you jump and your whole body comes unattached from the wall. Start with your Legs Just like all of climbing, doing dynos or dynamic climbing all starts with your legs. The biggest mistake climbers make is n ..read more

It's essential that every climber has ways to stay motivated and stoked to climb when they are at home or on a rest day. One of my favourite ways to get motivated at home is to watch some strong climber trying hard on their indoor and outdoor projects. Today I'll be sharing some of my favourite pages I follow to keep me stoked and excited to climb. ERIC KARLSSON BOULDERING Eric is an exceptional climbing vlogger from Stockholm, Sweden. I started following him over a year ago when he was putting out a climbing video every day for a whole year. It was the coolest thing to get to know him and his ..read more

HOW TO: Determine Indoor Bouldering Grades
Chalked Climber
by Chalked Climber

When you go into an indoor climbing gym most times you will see that each climb has a grade(difficulty) associated with it. This grade is to help you keep you from getting on a climb that you can't handle and to help you track your progress. One downside to grades is they are pretty subjective, there is no perfect science behind what makes a climb a certain grade. As a route setter myself I have to answer "Is this a V3 or V4?" a lot, so I thought I'd go over a few factors that go into deciding the grade of an indoor climb. Before I start I want you to know that these are just of the factors my ..read more

I LOVE CLIMBING: Route Setting

Route setting and creating routes and boulder problems for others to train on and improve as a climber is one of the most rewarding and hardest jobs possible. If you are a creative person like me, it is a joy to show up and be able to have the freedom to create whatever you want. You also get to help create moves and sequences to help others take their climbing to the next level. Lastly, it's so challenging to create moves that look good while forcing the climbers to think through their movement and see your vision. I will expand on each of these thoughts and give you the reasons why I love to ..read more

I LOVE CLIMBING: Climbing Community

The climbing community is one of my favorite parts about climbing and probably the main reason I still climb today. It's a great feeling to go to my local gym and know there will be other climbers there to discuss climbing with and climb alongside. Also, there is almost always staff there to ask any training questions or talk about the newly set climbs. Today is going to be a shorter post because I just wanted to share how much I love the climbing community. One of my favorite examples of the supportive climbing community was from my first ever bouldering competition, Portland Boulder Rally. S ..read more

Today I am going to take some time to answer the questions I get asked often from other climbers on Instagram and in the gym. WHAT SHOES DO YOU WEAR? I use the Evolv Shamans for warming up, and then I wear La Sportiva Futuras as my performance shoe. SHOULD I CLIMB INDOORS OR OUTDOORS? Both are diffent but have similarities. Some climbers would tell you that outdoor climbing is real climbing and indoor is just for training. But my opinion is that you should try both and focus on whichever you love. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOU SKIN FROM HURTING WHEN CLIMBING? I use WOD Welder: Handcare for Athletes almo ..read more

3 Science-Based Power Endurance Workouts

Today I'm headed to the climbing gym to train power endurance. I will be doing the 10 hardest boulders I can in one session. The goal is to do a large volume of near maximal effort boulders while trying to climb them with the best technique possible. Today I'll talk about some of the ways I've trained power endurance before, hopefully, you can pick up a few fresh ideas for your training sessions. 4x4's HOW: I'll start with probably the most well-known power endurance workout. How you do a 4x4 is you find 4 boulder problems that are hard but below your redpoint and climb the back to back, witho ..read more

The One Thing That Determines How Strong of a Climber You Are

How great you are at Climbing, and almost all sports comes down to how hard you are willing to work. Some people are talented and don't have to work as hard as others, but I'm not talking about compared to others. If you want to be the best climber you can be you need to be ready to put a lot of hard work in to achieve that goal. But if you want to be like 80% of the best climber you can be then you won't have to work quite as hard. If you only put in some work, you can't complain that you aren't the best climber you can be, because you simply didn't put in the work. We often get discouraged o ..read more
