Hi, I'm Summer Rayne Oakes. I started 'Plant One On Me' back in February 2017 to help answer houseplant care questions at my kitchen table with my iPhone 7. Since that time, the YouTube channel has expanded in scope and depth, featuring regular episodes that share the beauty of plants with the people who love them. Our mission is to bring people closer to plants by bringing plants..

We continue our group botanical tours through Costa Rica at the Arenal Volcano where the rich volcanic soil supports a diverse ecosystem. Since this area is primarily secondary forest, you won’t get to see the same massive trees as we did in Monteverde, but the trails and vegetation are super accessible, which gives you an opportunity to see more plants up close. And we’re not the only ones working our way through the forest to enjoy the plants. A number of leaf-cutter ants were busy criss-crossing the paths harvesting leaves for their fungi-gardens. If you’re curious when we’ll do our next gr ..read more

On our first botanical tour through Costa Rica, we did a vigorous hike through Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio, renowned for its breathtaking Rio Celeste waterfall, that descends 254-vertical steps off the main trail and magically appears turquoise due to the volcanic minerals. Unfortunately, nature had other plans for our second trip, as heavy rains prevented us from revisiting Tenorio Park. Instead, we diverted to the majestic 246-foot Fortuna Waterfall, an equally spectacular yet more accessible destination despite gradually descending 530 steps. Here, the powerful cascade drops into a cryst ..read more

The rain didn't stop us from visiting the Orchid Cafe and doing an orchid tour in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The botanic garden is housed right in town in Santa Elena, boasting over 450+ species of orchids—about 1/3 of Costa Rica's orchid species. Somewhere between 100-200 species bloom at any given time—but they are easy to miss, because as you'll see—some of them are miniatures! Special thanks to Andres for the excellent tour and for taking us through on this rainy day. The first days of fall are bittersweet because I know I'll be needing to take all my houseplants that were outdoors—back in soon. But one of the last tasks that need to happen even before that is giving the plants a nice fertilize before the sun really wanes in the sky.
