Earlier this week, Michael Bierut, Sonia Williams, and I spent an hour on the phone together. Michael is an influential graphic designer based in New York, Sonia is a high school student in Paintsville, Kentucky, and I’m a designer at Automattic, living outside of Boston. Sonia came prepared with a great set of questions. She prompted Michael to tell us about his career, and to take us through some of his favorite projects. We talked about designing this website. Michael described how he came to use a photo of the earth to represent home: he’d aimed to show the most universal representation of ..read more

Stacey, Tay, Me and Jason at Shongweni Parkrun Did someone say cake? Excellent timing on my part. It was my first Shongweni Park run and their 6th birthday – lots of celebrations were done, with cake at the finish. This was my “tester” with my legs and I disciplined myself to the middle to back of the pack…which is hard for me. This meant a slower pace which is just what I needed to see if I could still run. We were met with stunning blue skies and chatter of fellow Shongweni park run/ walkers. This is a beautiful trail starting from the horse paddocks of Durban Shongweni Club and fol ..read more

Injury. Not running. Frustration. Or not. 10 days ago I pulled a muscle in hockey and have not been able to run. I have used this time of injury and no-running to focus more on my strength and conditioning, instead of letting myself get frustrated. There are many benefits of strength and conditioning for trail runners: Improved exercise economyImproved anaerobic capacityDecrease fatigueIncreased maximal strengthIncreased maximal speedIncreased endurance performanceIncreased rate of force developmentImproved agility, proprioception and balance How does the tissue respond to st ..read more

The Eco Trails are a paradise in the middle of Westville which has been developed since August 2015 and maintained by the Westville Country Club. It is a popular running, walking and mountain bike area open to all. I was introduced to these trails in 2017 as I was desperate for a change of scenery after my first Comrades. It was winter. And dark. So it was my initiation to trail running in the dark with a headlamp. Absolutely awesome. And so are the people. Thursday mornings we regularly meet for our weekly gander through the Westville Eco Trails. We have introduced regul ..read more

Inhlosane Mountain Trail Hidden beauty on our doorstep in the upper Dargle area in the Midlands is the Inhlosane Mountain which overlooks the Mount Park Guest Farm. http://www.mountpark.co.za I had the privilege of being a guest at an amazing wedding over the weekend. My friend, Kim Drummond, is one of my crazies for trail running. This was a perfect setting for her wedding. I managed to sneak away on the Saturday morning, gorgeous blue skies and crisp air, with a new trail buddy, Grace Drummond. Already we were sitting at a nice altitude in Dargle around 1400 m or so and the peak of the I ..read more
