The Alentejo Birding Trail (Rota de Observação de Aves) is a new birdwatching route that has been created to help birders from all over the world come and enjoy the greatest birding hotspots of Baixo Alentejo. That includes for now the councils of Castro Verde, Mértola and Serpa. Whether you come birding in Portugal with or without a birding guide, this is a great addition to the portuguese birdwatching infrastructures. We are very happy to have been part of this project, helping determine which hotspots should part of the route.

Birding day trip on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, this time starting at midday and enjoying the beautiful lights in the evening (Spoiler alert, it was magical).
I meet Lucie and Nicolas at peak time in Yverdon near the Robert Hainard promenade. A place well known to ornithologists and many species of birds. During the autumn migration, it is the last stop on a lake before the agricultural plains and Lake Geneva a few tens of kilometers further.
And it starts well, as soon as we arrive a group of Dunlins are feeding less than 10 meters away.

We experienced so many wonderful encounters during our birding tour in Alentejo this spring that it is difficult to know how to describe them!
I meet our 6 guests and our second local guide on Friday morning, and after a short briefing, we take the road towards the steppes of the Castro Verde region. The weather is nice and there is a little wind. A first stop allows us to observe a colony of Western House-Martins and a nest of White Storks with 2 young ones.
Little by little, the landscapes change and the typical Alentejo scenery appear. We spend the whole day in this fairly large area which ..read more

More than 550 species of birds have already been observed in Portugal. An impressive number which can be explained in particular by the diversity of habitats present in Portugal, and by the fact that the Iberian Peninsula is located on one of the most important bird migration corridors in the world. Also, let’s not forget that Portugal has within its territory the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira, which not only host endemic bird species, but also see birds from the American continent stopping by.

It's early in the morning that I meet our participant who came from Switzerland for this 3-day birding tour in Alentejo, Portugal. I pick him up from his hotel in the center of Lisbon and we immediately set off towards the Tagus Estuary where we will spend most of this first day. Indeed, the Tagus Estuary is an essential place for bird watching in Portugal, perhaps even the best birding hotspot in the country. Winter is a fabulous season to discover the area because the diversity of species and the quantity of birds is quite phenomenal.
The interesting sightings begin as soon as we arrive, inc ..read more

The Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) belongs to the family Otididae, representing the only member of the genus Tetrax. Its range extends from the grasslands of Western and Southern Europe to parts of Asia, covering territories from the Iberian Peninsula to southern Russia. Unfortunately, this species, although once widespread, now faces increasing threats and is classified as near-threatened on the IUCN Red List.
Resembling its cousin the Great Bustard, the Little Bustard is distinguished by its brown-beige plumage, with finer and more delicate patterns. Its powerful legs are also a distinctive ..read more

For this morning birding tour at the Grangettes reserve, I meet Martial and his mother to enjoy the arrival of the wintering birds on Lake Geneva. Right when we start, we cross a first harbour already with the water birds typical of our urbanized banks. We observed a few Common Coots as well as a Great Crested Grebe of the year. The water is very calm and we observe a beautiful scene of underwater hunting led by the Grebe.
Going up the first watercourse of Eau Froide we observe Eurasian Moorhens and therefore differentiate between it with the coot. Then a rather shy Gray Heron lets itself be o ..read more

Meet with Thibault and Johanne on the crests of the Jura, at La Dôle, for a sunny afternoon above the stratus. As soon as our walk has begun, we come across a group of at least 200 Common Chaffinches feeding on the ground, a good start for our wildlife tour.

Approaching the agricultural building under the Dôle cliff, a Common Kestrel is perched on top of a spruce tree. We observe it in detail with a long view. A few Black Redstarts squabble and catch the eye. Alongside them, at least three Gray Wagtails and two pipits take advantage of the insects circling above the roof.

It's 8 a.m. and I'm meeting our 5 guests for a new edition of our nature excursion to the Marais de Sionnet in the Geneva countryside. One of the best birding sites in the canton of Geneva, where it is sometimes also possible to see mammals, amphibians and insects. A place rich in biodiversity.
During these three hours of nature tour at the Marais de Sionnet, we had the privilege of observing around twenty species of birds, including the Water Rail, the Great Spotted Woodpecker, the Northern Shoveler, the Long-tailed Tit and the European Sparrowhawk.
