As javelin throwers, we're passionate about our craft and always trying to find that extra something to give us a further throw. This passion is great but it's also important to filter all information we use very carefully. Hyper mobility or the quest for extreme flexibility can cause problems especially if you over stretch the wrong areas. Stretching too much can cause laxity and instability. Our bodies are made up of areas that can become flexible and areas that are meant to be stable. If you're creating excess range in your lower spine, this can adversely affect your throwing and possibly l ..read more

Avoiding Hip Drive Flare in A Javelin Throw
This is a fairly straightforward situation that can get the best of us when we're throwing.
Basically what happens is we press our hip and thigh out to the throwing side to create more power. Unfortunately, this stops our natural hip rotation and creates a hip slide. When we shut down a big joint like the hip, this cause us to crash and lose energy in the throw.
Any time you press the hip, you are subtlety breaking the motion you began with.
Let's look at the pictures.
In pic 1,
In the first picture, the thrower looks set to begin their hip drive. So ..read more

Well, the javelin world is wide awake right now! Great throwing by Johannes Vetter of Germany! Vetter has such a dynamic and high speed motion. It’s truly great to see such impressive motion. Vetter has both speed and strength. If you do not possess a physicality such as his, you may not be able to copy such a crazy motion as does he but hey, we can all enjoy 97+ meter throws none the less.
Thomas Rohler being more of a whippy and flexible thrower simply via his own body and Andreas Hoffman being a giant among men are two different German throwers who complement a stable of great throwers from ..read more

(picture above is not Kuortane, just a nice track pic) This video shows Zelezny popping throws over 90 meters with ease in Kuortane, Finland. Home of the javelin. One thing to note in these throws is his position in regard to the front. Many throwers can get too sideways and lose the ability to finish the throw to the front. This is a run up issue predominately but areas of the throwing motion can be affected as well.

Seppo Raty attack line. Some people know Seppo was insanely strong. Off the charts strong. He could tip backwards with a 16lb shot and touch the ground in a back bend and then powerfully bend back up and throw it. No joke. Strong.
He also had insane technique and delivery. This video will really help you understand the line of attack in a good throw.
Check out this video and PAUSE it at 230 and 231 when it shows the forward view.

There are so many back exercises out there that pose just as much risk as they do benefit and though I’m not trying to use scare tactics, when they parallel facts, there’s not much I can do. Having a good machine that forces people to stabilize and mobilize in the right places can really save my clients.
There aren’t too many of these machines around anymore. Gyms have given way to dead lifting platforms, fancy 1 leg hip extension machines and other modalities to train our hips and lower spines. So, the question that aeries is: Are the new innovations better? Not even close!
These old double h ..read more
