If you’ve been following USHSC’s content for a while now, you know we’re all about that DIY ethic and finding the most affordable way for all us amateurs to enjoy, play, and practice the sport we love. Along those lines, we thought it’d be helpful to put out a “How To” for making a groundstrike trainer. This handy contraption is perfect for personal or club use. For each groundstrike trainer, you’ll need: Materials: 1 Wall Ball 1 Tent Stake (MSR Groundhogs recommended as they don’t bend as easily as cheap stakes) Length of Paracord (4-6ft. Recommended) Tools: Drill Press (Handheld Drill can ..read more

Hurley Sizing - What Size Hurl Should You Get?
US Hurling & Supply, Co.

We're shootin' the s##t about sizin' yo' sticks. Think you're kinda tall and need a 36"? Looking for extra length to fell some trees? Take a second to check out our sizing guide and figure out which stick is right for you. Here in the US, the typical advice about hurley sizing has lagged far enough behind the game development and play-style changes that the advice is now a bit dated. During a recent trip to Ireland (where we had a chance to play directly against several Irish clubs), we spoke with several players, hurley-makers, coaches, and other interested parties to discuss the issue of hu ..read more

Mycro Evolution Review
US Hurling & Supply, Co.

We were given a pair of Mycro Evolution synthetic hurleys (32" & 34") for a long-term test/review and, overall, had a positive experience. The Evolution is a solid-body hurley that comes ready-to-play with supplied grip (URMA in our case). The product is priced at $59-70, including shipping, direct from Mycro. Here are the thoughts and reviews from two of our staff. Disclaimer: Outside of the product itself, we received no additional compensation for this review. Kevin: Prior to this review, my synthetic/composite hurley experience was limited to the solid-body Reynolds hurley we sell h ..read more

Hurley Maintenance
US Hurling & Supply, Co.

Hurley Maintenance Most of U.S. Hurling and Supply Co.’s staff had the opportunity to check out the showroom at Torpey Hurleys last summer while visiting Ireland with a collection of hurlers from a few clubs. Sean Torpey – hurley maker, furniture-making-degree-holder, and all-around timber tinkerer – was engaging in a fascinating demonstration and Q&A when one of the attending players brought up the subject of hurley care and maintenance. After asking the expert-in-the-room’s advice, the player qualified his question: his own maintenance efforts include prolonged submergence of his stick i ..read more

Basic Wall Ball Drills
US Hurling & Supply, Co.
by John Wilkinson

Ever a stalwart friend, the Hurling Wall is amongst the most tried and true methods for individual skill development. Whether working in a couple minutes to keep those wrists snappy or venting some frustration by peltin’ some plastic against those palisades, the Hurling Wall should be a staple of your training regimen. At US Hurling & Supply Co., we’re ardent believers that if you own a fancy pair of colorful boots (cleats) but don’t have a wall ball, your priorities are pretty poorly positioned. If you can’t think of a good wall to practice striking off of, find one! Just keep an eye out ..read more

Regional Hurley Cuts
US Hurling & Supply, Co.
by John Wilkinson

We get a number of questions about the different hurley cuts and why they are different as much as how they are different. Here is our brief take on the matter: The Maher Wexford Cut is the most balanced, “Middle-of-the-Road” option of the 3 profiles when comparing how pronounced the heel and toe are. The Wexford Cut also features the smallest overall bas profile in terms of surface area, allowing for quicker stick maneuvering but slightly less surface area for soloing.  The Maher Cork Cut provides the most pronounced heel and least pronounced toe of the 3 profiles. The more pronounced heel i ..read more

Note: If you haven't seen it already, be sure to check Hurley Repair - Part 1  for a rundown of how we got to this point. At his point in our story, we've identified which repairs are worth attempting and applied the fix(es). If you're lucky, a bit of cleanup is all that is required from here. In the following video we'll go over the cleanup using nothing but a utility blade and a bit of sandpaper. The video will go further, however, and describe methods to bring life back into seriously damaged hurls. Like mentioned in the previous video, for safety's sake, some of the repairs shouldn't see c ..read more

Hurley Repair - Part 1
US Hurling & Supply, Co.
by Kevin Lisowski

For American hurling players, there's no denying that a hurley quickly becomes a very personal thing. You know the balance, the weight, the sweet-spot, and what angle to hold when sprinting into a lift (plus, if you bought it from Ireland it took forever to get here!). Broken sticks happen. There is no getting around that, though it is a bit of a 'gut check' moment when it happens. You and that stick have history, right? The good news is that hurl can be fixed in nearly every case. It may never see the pitch again but that old friend can still help you through wall-ball drills and other, lower ..read more
