With another overnight cargo theft, the City of Brotherly Love hasn’t been kind to sleeping truckers over the past few months. On Thursday, March 14, Philadelphia police responded to a reported cargo theft in the northeast portion of the city. Officials said the thieves made off with cases of bourbon from the trailer while the driver was asleep in the cab. “The driver was awakened by the truck shaking,” Captain Jack Ryan of the department’s Northeast Detectives Unit told ABC6. Paccar has announced the recall of over 116,000 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks due to a gear shifter issue. According to recall information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an improperly crimped connector in the gear shifter can cause a loss of communication between it and the transmission. A mix of fuel tax changes are under consideration at statehouses from California to New Jersey. In California, an Assembly bill is intended to provide some relief at the fuel pump. The state charges a 57.9-cent excise tax on gas and a 44.1-cent rate on diesel. California’s average diesel price is about $1.35 above the national average for a gallon of on-highway diesel fuel, according to AAA. The state’s average gas price is about $1.46 above the national average for a gallon of regular gas. Support for the bipartisan Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act is gaining steam in Congress. Sen. Pete Ricketts, R-Neb., became a co-sponsor on Thursday, March 14, while Rep. Vehicle idling is the topic of legislation introduced at statehouses from the East Coast to the West Coast. Colorado A Colorado House bill would revise the state’s idling rules. Currently, the state has a uniform idling standard that prohibits a vehicle from idling for more than five minutes within any 60-minute period. Certain exceptions apply. The Canadian government is stepping in to address worker misclassification issues within the transportation industry. This week, Employment and Social Development Canada announced a campaign aimed at addressing the issues of worker misclassification through the use of a mobile enforcement unit.
