The Atalanta Freedom Tour: On Lindy Travels and Swing Community

Earth Day celebration in a St. Louis Mo. park EDITOR’S NOTE: Amy Winn (“Atalanta” on Yehoodi) contributed this piece on how lindy hop and Yehoodi impacted her life. Over the years, Amy has been such a strong supporter and contributor to our community. Although you probably didn’t do quite as much lindy travel as Amy, I bet there’s a lot in here that you can relate to. It might be slightly dramatic but it’s still entirely accurate to say that Yehoodi changed my life. Lindy hop was an activity, but Yehoodi was a community.  Yehoodi was part of my every day, for years. Yehoodi connected me ..read more

Who’s Yehoodi? Seven Stories about Yehoodi’s Legacy and Impact
Yehoodi Blog

As I try to summarize 25 years of Yehoodi, I realize that Yehoodi has been a lot of things to a lot of people over the years. Yehoodi has been…. A discussion forum for lindy hoppers A calendar of swing events A dance party organizer A swing news service A video and podcast producer An online event broadcaster But that seems a little backwards. Yehoodi has always been its community, the many thousands of lindy hoppers who have connected through this site, in small ways and large.  In light of that, we thought it made the most sense to ask you all what Yehoodi has meant to yo ..read more

For Dancers Only: David Jacoby on Connecting Musicians to Lindy Hoppers

Junior Mance and Ray Bryant at Y7A (2005) Have you heard Junior Mance's version of “For Dancers Only”?  He takes this fast, big band Jimmie Lunceford tune and flips it on its head.  Slow, bluesy, heartfelt, yet still a swingin' rollercoaster ride.  What amazing ability to have the creativity to hear a song like that in a completely different way. In 2002 I heard he was playing at Knickerbockers, an intimate restaurant near Washington Square.  I called Manu, and off we went to see him.  He blew our minds immediately.  We sheepishly said hi to him during the e ..read more

CREDIT: Timothy Swiecicki Editor’s Note: We were so pleased to receive this write up by our friend Cynthia Millman, co-author of The Ambassador of Lindy Hop with Frankie Manning. If you want to share your own remembrances of Yehoodi, head to our Facebook group. Here’s what Cynthia shared with us: To everyone who was and is Yehoodi, I offer humongous, ginormous thanks for all you’ve done for the swing dance community . . . for decades. I am sad in a time-is-passing kind of way about this ending, but I know how much work these kinds of commitments are. If you are ready to move on I can only be ..read more

Twelve Years of Yehoodi (reprint from 2010)

EDITOR NOTE: Spuds wrote this in October of 2010 when we were unveiling the new “Yehoodi 3.1” site. Still lots of great memories that are worth remembering! “12 Years of Yehoodi” by Manu Smith, October 2010  Yehoodi.com just reached its twelfth year in existence and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. I can still remember the nights I would spend, up until two in the morning manually (pardon the pun) updating the news page so that lindy hoppers would have something to read the next day. Yehoodi has come a long way from those days, but it’s still challenging me and ..read more

Yehoodi Shutting Down after 25 Years: Help us Remember and Celebrate
Yehoodi Blog

Yes, it’s true: after a quarter century of serving the lindy hop community, Yehoodi.com is shutting down. We’re proud of everything we’ve accomplished in this time, from our wildly popular online forums, to our many crazy media projects, to live broadcasts of ILHC and Frankie100, to our news and commentary we’ve shared over the years. So why quit? While lindy hop continues to grow and evolve, the Yehoodi team has moved on to other projects. And we’re confident that there are others ready to take on the work.  Meanwhile, we’d like to mark this occasion to celebrate all that we accomplishe ..read more

Yehoodi is Turning 25: We want your stories!

Believe it or not, it was about 25 years ago that Yehoodi.com first started as one of the first online spaces dedicated to lindy hop. In 1998, a small group of dancers decided that New York City needed a website to connect local “hepcat swingers.” A bit of coding by Spuds and some cash paid to a local web host and Yehoodi.com was born!  Over the years, what began as a local web hangout grew into a national and then international site. Our offerings expanded to include discussion forums, a national events calendar, swing news coverage, streaming radio, podcasts, a video talk show, annual ..read more

Lindyhop the Card Game Kickstarter Launches

We received news about the launch of the kickstarter campaign for “Lindyhop the Card Game.” Since the Venn diagram of lindy hoppers and board game enthusiasts is almost the same circle, this seems like a natural. Here’s how the organizers describe the game: “In Lindyhop the Card Game, two players work together to dance their meeple down a track of music, trying collectively to hit the beat in the best places to score the most points. There’s 5 suits with 8 cards in a suit and each suit includes 4 cards with special powers that will only activate at certain times in the music. Players will try ..read more
