The Discussion Forums Dominating 10,000 Product Review Search Results

In an analysis of 10,000 keyphrases where product reviews rank highly, Google’s increasingly prominent ‘Discussions and forums’ SERP feature was present in 7,702 of them. Reddit was the most dominant brand in the results by far, but that’s only scratching the surface of what I set out to discover. I wanted to know: Can new forums rank well? How many individual sites does Google promote in them? Do any other sites besides Reddit dominate the results? Do forums on subdomains or subfolders tend to rank better? Are the top-ranking forums owned independently or by media goliaths? We have answers ..read more

Future today announced the redesign of TechRadar, one of the web’s biggest authority sites covering technology news and product reviews. Future (trading publicy as $FUTR) are currently the biggest digital goliath we track in terms of how many brands they operate, with their 86 sites pulling in more than 100M clicks from Google each month. Black and pink is the new colour scheme they’re going for, compared to the muted blue of their “previous” design. I put previous in quotes as you can still access their old design if you look at any international versions of the site. The new TechRadar homepa ..read more

I recently analyzed 250,000 English-language search results, primarily to answer a specific question: Do sites owned by large media companies attain more first-place rankings than independent webmasters? And if so, just how dominant are they? After weeks of full-time work I have the answers I was looking for, and initially they were more surprising than I imagined. I say this as someone who has written extensively about how media companies have taken over product review search results, the 16 companies behind 500 sites Google sends 3Bn+ monthly clicks and even started keeping tabs on them in q ..read more

I want to start by saying that I’m not sharing this update via email or social media, and I would appreciate it if it’s just left between us. That is, people who come to Detailed directly (or subscribe to the RSS feed) for news and insights on SEO and digital goliaths. Today I want to explain why the regular updates you’ll see from me in the future will be in a very different format. As a quick backstory, around 90 days ago I started a new experiment, writing regular blog posts covering the acquisitions, redirects and traffic updates of some of the most successful brands on the internet. I started writing this article on the 17th of August when I discovered the news I’m about to share but I wasn’t able to write it up as my new report on digital goliaths, Detailed Q1, had to take priority. The reaction to Q1 was incredible — thank you to everyone who took the time to read and share it. As I’m a little slow to cover this I’m surprised nobody beat me to it (though one of the original site owners noticed), but maybe that’s because the news I have to share is super nerdy: We now have a great idea who bought three finance sites from XL Media for $1.3M. To recap, at the end of May of ..read more

The popular site for enthusiasts of the football game FIFA, Futhead, was updated this week to show a message announcing its closure. It reads, “Unfortunately we have had to shut down operations. We’re so appreciative of your contribution and engagement over the years and wish you a bright, FIFA/FC filled future.” Futhead is one of the sites we track for digital goliath Fandom (the #1 brand on our list of 16 companies dominating Google) and was pretty popular if third-party estimates are accurate. Ahrefs estimates the site was pulling in around 400,000 visitors each month from organic search, c ..read more

Gfinity today announced the launch of Starfield Portal, a new site dedicated to news, updates and walkthroughs for the upcoming game from Bethesda, Starfield. As you’ve probably guessed I have more than just a website launch to share, but this announcement brought back some nice memories for me. When I first started building websites as a teenager, before Twitter was a thing and WordPress was barely on anyone’s radar, online forums were all the rage. While most people were content to be forum members, a group of us were constantly on the lookout for what was coming next (new cars, games consol ..read more
