Our Pottery Studio Back in September of 2014, Jennie and Paul Christensen joined Telunas Resorts.  Jennie was directing school group programs and Paul was hired on an artist in residence (among other things).  Paul suggested to the resort owners the idea of building a pottery kiln that could be used for delivering guest experiences and making handmade souvenirs from the clay of Sugi Island. They agreed and the pottery studio was born. Locals identified several locations where good clay existed. Paul built a small kiln to start that was used for testing the quality of the local clay ..read more

Alternative to Bali We love Bali…who doesn’t? But recently a friend asked me about an alternative to Bali. There have been lots of recent articles in travel publications about “overtourism” in Bali and some people are looking for an alternative to Bali once the island opens again. Overwater Villas as an Alternative to Bali I shared Telunas Private Island with my friend. You can visit Telunas Private Island now and enjoy an incredible experience in a beautiful and safe environment. When travel opens up to Bali they anticipate the crowds will come again. To Be an English Teacher…

Hi! My name is Ali, and I’m one of the English teachers at Telunas Resorts.. I certainly didn’t think I would end up teaching English when I was first hired back in 2016. But over the years, I have learned that there is more than meets the eye at Telunas! After working on the Guest Relations team for a couple of years, I transitioned into our Holistic Community Development department. Around that time, I was contacted by some of our local Telunas staff and some leaders from the small village of Tanjung Sesup, about 15 minutes from our property. They proposed that Telunas launch an English cour ..read more

How a Pencil Changed My Life

How a Pencil Changed My Life by Florensia Uba Doni I was born and grew up on Sugi Island, the island where Telunas Beach Resort is located. My house is in the jungle because my father was a farmer. He always liked being in the field rather than in the city. I have six brothers, and I am the only girl. Though my family actually originated from eastern Indonesia on the island of Flores, I grew up in the local Riau Melayu culture and consider it my first culture. I love it because they have traditional dance, lots of delicious local foods, and the people are very friendly. Our life was (and stil ..read more

Ramadan in the Riau by Deo Sinulingga Indonesia, home to hundreds of tribes and languages, always provides you with a chance to discover and experience the beauty of culture wherever you go. At Telunas Resorts, we employ Indonesians from across the country with a wide range of backgrounds and beliefs. However, since we are located in the Riau Archipelago, the majority of our local staff are Melayu. Malay tradition is strong here, and most of our staff are Muslim. Although we don’t all have the same belief system, we celebrate and respect our differences, adhering to one of the core values of T ..read more

Earth Day 2020 by Enda Kastanya Earth Day first began in the 1970s. This annual event was designed as a way to demonstrate support for global environmental protection. Here at Telunas, we strive to contribute positively to our planet… not just on Earth Day, but daily! Our efforts have ranged from switching to bamboo straws from plastic, minimizing the use of disposable water bottles, developing a system for mindful waste disposal, reducing our food waste through fermentative composting, and moving toward a goal of nearly 100% solar-powered operations. Outside of Telunas, our staff also partne ..read more

A Journey to the Riau: Chef Yudi’s Story

When I first met Yudi, he struck me as an unassuming and quiet man, and it took me a while before I realized that he was Telunas’ new sous-chef. It wasn’t until I sat down to get to know Yudi some more that I understood why he is such a great addition to the Telunas team. Yudi was born and raised in Lampung province on the south tip of Sumatra, known for its surfing beaches, snorkeling, and being situated just north of the historic Krakatoa volcano. For Yudi, cooking was an interest that blossomed into a desire to be a professional chef. After receiving a degree from culinary school, he got hi ..read more
