March 2023 Maldives Surf Report and Forecast

March is always fun in the far south of the Maldives. Long tropical days of sunny weather and light or no winds means that any swell that meets the south facing reefs is likely to produce glassy peeling waves. With the Indian Ocean Dipole system of 2022 fading to memory, along with the La Nina of the Pacific Ocean – normal programming has resumed – and that’s not a bad thing. Typically March is a month where many different swell producing systems could contribute swell, from different directions at the same time – a combination of swells can result in playful wedges at different spots on the r ..read more

Cobblestone points, beach breaks, river mouths, and the odd mellow reef dot the long coastline. If you’re after fun waves and warm water, you’ll love Taiwan. Plus, there’s the vast amount of things you can do out of the water; hot springs, night markets, food market ..read more

Where to score uncrowded waves in the Maldives?

Early in the 2022 surf season, I got a chance to surf some unexplored waves in the Northern Atolls close by the InterContinental Resort which was a real treat. Probably one of the best and most memorable highlights of the 10 years I’ve worked in the Maldives.   It’s amazing to think there are still unexplored and unchartered areas to surf in the year 2022. Empty Northern Atolls   No more than 10-20 minutes boats ride from Intercontinental Resort Maamunagau, and you are surfing uncrowded, unexplored virgin waves. There are waves on both sides of the Raa Atoll, so depending on the w ..read more

With international travel back on the agenda, there has been no shortage of visitors to Bali. After a tentative start when borders reopened in June with travel restrictions easing into Indonesia, visitors returned to the island paradise in July after a long absence. Those that were here, were blessed with consistent swells and excellent conditions throughout the surf season. The transition to the dry season conditions was later than usual. There were plenty of small to medium sized days across the Bukit Peninsula, with reliable SE offshore trade winds. But you had to be out there early to scor ..read more

July 2022 Maldives Surf Report and Forecast

June was a joy for Maldives surfers; days and days of consistent mid sized swells groomed by light to moderate offshores. The sort of conditions that make for very memorable surf trips. Especially when there is a few standout sessions when all the variables align to create those moments of perfection. The lefts of South Male can be fickle – but when they turn on, they’re world class. Foxys did its thing for a lucky crew at Kandooma who scored when they came over on the regular boat trips.             View this post on Instagram         ..read more

May delivered the goods right across the Maldives. As forecast last month, a strong pulse from the SE lit up the east-facing breaks. The Westerly monsoon winds were gusty at times, with a trend to SW and so the rights like Kandooma were nicely groomed. Unfortunately, some of the lefts were side-onshore, but still very surfable under the same conditions. Well, the main Maldives surf season kicked off nicely in April with a pulsing round of South-East trade swell in late April, lighting up the Male and Central Atolls. Right on time, the light westerly winds kicked in, resulting in standout sessions across many of our favourite east-facing breaks. Kandooma Right had non-stop mid-sized fun and glassy conditions for last couple of weeks; check out the everyday fun waves on Insta.             View this post on Instagram                         ..read more
