Where to score uncrowded waves in the Maldives?

Early in the 2022 surf season, I got a chance to surf some unexplored waves in the Northern Atolls close by the InterContinental Resort which was a real treat. Probably one of the best and most memorable highlights of the 10 years I’ve worked in the Maldives.   It’s amazing to think there are still unexplored and unchartered areas to surf in the year 2022. Empty Northern Atolls   No more than 10-20 minutes boats ride from Intercontinental Resort Maamunagau, and you are surfing uncrowded, unexplored virgin waves. There are waves on both sides of the Raa Atoll, so depending on the w ..read more

I reckon every surfer with social media will already know the last month in Indo has been cooking. Not just regular Indo season everyday cooking, but all-time best-ever OMFG cooking! Everybody’s favourite YouTube tube-pig Nathan Florence almost upstaged his brother’s Championship Tour event winning efforts with a series of incredible sessions across the Mentawai in Late May and early June. Both well-known and unknown breaks were on fire and Nathan, Ivan and their local hosts from Bilou Beach Villas and HTs Resort clocked some of the biggest hollowest Indo pits of recent years.   &nbs ..read more

April Surf Report We love April in the Maldives, it’s a special time when swells can come from every direction yet the local winds are often light and the skies are blue. In 2024, the Maldives are enjoying a return to regular programming, where the season follows a classic pattern and the absence of the strong local winds. The surfers lucky enough to travel during the season have been scoring as all regions have benefited at some time. Southern Atolls – with exposure to SW and S groundswells and SE trade swells, breaks like Beacons, Blue Bowls and Love Charms have been on the pump. The Carpe ..read more

Surf Report – March 2024 The 2024 Maldives surf season has begun in fine style, with the south-facing breaks of Gaafu Dhaalu firing up with solid swells and glassy conditions through March. The Indian Ocean has been providing swell through March from both of Maldives major swell windows. The SE swells usually don’t fire up until later, however, active monsoon troughs south of Sumatra have produced enhanced SE fetch south of the equator, resulting in a pulsing mid-period swell across much of the Maldives through mid-March.     Blue Bowls looking idyllic, 18 March 2024:   &nbs ..read more

After an ok start to the month, the last weeks of May 2024 in the Maldives wer unforgettable, unfortunately for some it was for the wrong reasons. A sustained period of gales and storms covering much of the region for over a week, limiting the opportunities for surfing. At times, the storms restricted the movement of the boats, requiring them to remain at safe anchorages. Despite all this, surfers still found some waves and good times ensued At Kandooma, the Music In Paradise event with Delta Goodrem was making memories and all participants were buzzing. Layne Beachley and friends were out on ..read more
