Over the last few weeks, I've noticed that me and my middle child have been at loggerheads more and more.
I've been nagging him more, he's been listening less, and in general we've just been annoying each other.
Yesterday I decided that I had enough, and that the two of us needed a quick reset. We needed to do something we both enjoyed, and where he could take some control of our activity.
Fortunately, he is starting to really enjoy some amateur photography, so instead on of the usual lunch-homework-tidying-prepping after school schedule, we hopped in the car with my old little Canon M50 an ..read more

Eventually, we're going to tell you the full story about how we welcomed this little guy into the big world.
Right now though, I've thinking about the kind of support we give dads and dads to be. I've ranted and complained about this issue for years, and now I've got a whole new experience to talk about.
Here's what happened: throughout Julie's pregnancy, during the birth, and even now a few weeks after, there were people checking in on me.
I had people regularly ask me how I was doing, and what help I needed. They weren't asking me about Julie or the baby - I was the central point of conce ..read more

There's one thing that I think all the best dads-to-be do and I want to talk about it.
So Afrodaddy's kind of big message has always been that Dads should be present and involved and engaged with their kids' lives, but what I haven't really spoken about a lot over the years is that that actually starts well before your kid arrives
Because before that moment when you actually meet your child for the first time happens, you need to be getting yourself ready to do the job and that involves work.
Now I think for a lot of dads that kind of means getting your ..read more

As I helped my wife up on the bed in preparation for yet another baby scan, I joked that they really should call dads and dads-to-be "scaffolding".
The more I thought about it, the more the joke actually made sense though.
Physically, we're doing a lot of support as our partners do the actual building. Sometimes that can be the late night run for the snack your pregnant wife is craving, sometimes it can be tying her shoes because getting over the belly is tough and her back hurts, and sometimes it's just being a pillar that she can use as a support to get up and down.
Emotionally, we've got be ..read more

This is first of series I'm writing this year called "The Decade of Dad". Every month I'll be talking about one lesson about parenting I've learned over the past 10 years.
My eldest turned 10 this month, which means 2 things:
My baby is too big and that makes me a little weepy
I've been a dad for a whole decade
Here's one lesson I've learned in those 10 years: Don't ask them about their day the moment you pick them up or when they arrive home.
You may get lucky: maybe they had a brilliant day and just can't wait to download everything they've experienced into your brain, but it's much more l ..read more

Hey there, welcome to AfroDaddy.
Happy New Year, happy holidays and all that jazz.
As this year started, I've been thinking a lot about the power of words. You know how a really great piece of writing or poetry or song can really stick with you for your whole life? I think the same is true with the words we say, and I think what really sparked that thought was this video:
