So Afrodaddy's kind of big message has always been that Dads should be present and involved and engaged with their kids' lives, but what I haven't really spoken about a lot over the years is that that actually starts well before your kid arrives Because before that moment when you actually meet your child for the first time happens, you need to be getting yourself ready to do the job and that involves work. Now I think for a lot of dads that kind of means getting your ..read more

More than Scaffolding

As I helped my wife up on the bed in preparation for yet another baby scan, I joked that they really should call dads and dads-to-be "scaffolding". The more I thought about it, the more the joke actually made sense though. Physically, we're doing a lot of support as our partners do the actual building. Sometimes that can be the late night run for the snack your pregnant wife is craving, sometimes it can be tying her shoes because getting over the belly is tough and her back hurts, and sometimes it's just being a pillar that she can use as a support to get up and down. Emotionally, we've got be ..read more

Surviving the Daily Catch Up [Decade of Dad]

This is first of series I'm writing this year called "The Decade of Dad". Every month I'll be talking about one lesson about parenting I've learned over the past 10 years. My eldest turned 10 this month, which means 2 things: My baby is too big and that makes me a little weepy I've been a dad for a whole decade Here's one lesson I've learned in those 10 years: Don't ask them about their day the moment you pick them up or when they arrive home. You may get lucky: maybe they had a brilliant day and just can't wait to download everything they've experienced into your brain, but it's much more l ..read more

This post is the transcript from a AfroDaddy video. You can watch the video on Youtube or Instagram. Hey there, welcome to AfroDaddy.   Happy New Year, happy holidays and all that jazz.   As this year started, I've been thinking a lot about the power of words. You know how a really great piece of writing or poetry or song can really stick with you for your whole life? I think the same is true with the words we say, and I think what really sparked that thought was this video:  https://youtu.be/xwbI8VOsDTo Basically the whole video is about the importance ..read more

I had dream the night after my dad died. Here's what it taught me about parenting

Today is the anniversary of my dad's passing. Wait! Before you scroll past...this actually will have a point beyond just being kinda sad, I promise. His death was sudden, and caught all of us off-guard and uncertain about what the future holds and how to deal with it all. I guess this isn't strange when a loved one dies from a heart attack. That night, when I finally managed to fall asleep, I had an unusually vivid dream: I was in a turbulent and grey sea, being battered by waves just off a coast that was just a high cliff-face of jagged rocks. I could hear the boom of the waves smashing again ..read more

The statistics about South African dads (we don't talk about)

We've all seen the stat that says that more than half of SA children don't live with their biological dad. While that is a scary number, here are 3 other stats that give a much more hopeful view of the future of fatherhood in SA! https://youtu.be/vHDN2d7SI5c ..read more

Why Your Man Won't Go To Therapy

I know from my viewing stats that this post probably won't do well. It might be because of the algorithm, or because people just don't seem to care that much, but as soon as I start talking about mental health for men, and especially dads, the amount of people that see and engage with the posts drop off precipitively. However, this is still a hugely important issue, so I'll just keep banging this drum as hard as I can. Whenever I am asked "What is the number one thing men can do to prepare for fatherhood?" my answer is always the same: "Go to therapy" After saying this, most people giggle, bec ..read more

Travelling for work can be tough, especially if you're a parent. The best way I know of to deal with the extra stress is simple - have a partner who can take on all the household and child care stuff. https://youtu.be/c1Xkdefkzws Are you showing that person the gratitude they deserve? What do you need from your partner to make your work trips less stressful? Leave a comment ..read more
